2007-2008, 3 cases
Phi Kappa Psi – March 19, 2008
The Student Affairs Committee supports the Interfraternity Council recommendation of Critical Social Probation for one calendar year for Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. This is considered equivalent to a second offense under the University Initiatives of Alcohol and Other Drugs by the Student Affairs Committee.
The Student Affairs Committee would like to see a revised organization reform proposal by April 4, 2008, as discussed during the hearing, for continued dialogue between the committee and the fraternity.
Kappa Alpha Order – March 19, 2008
The Student Affairs Committee affirms the Interfraternity Council recommendation of Critical Probation for Kappa Alpha Order with the following Interfraternity Council provided conditions:
- $10 per member monetary educational fee payable to Washington and Lee University, Office of Student Affairs
- Mandatory educational speaker
- Semester updates sent to the Interfraternity Council, the Director of Student Activities and the Student Affairs Committee
- Notification of House Corporation and parents
- Compliance with the sanctions set forth by Kappa Alpha Order National Administrative Office
- Critical Probation in effect for one calendar year during which Kappa Alpha Order will be monitored closely by the Interfraternity Council and the Student Affairs Committee.
The Student Affairs Committee also recommends participation in Greek Vision Council and that the IFC-mandated speaker address a model New Member Education program that is hazing–free.
We commend as a model the collaboration between the national organization, the local chapter, the Interfraternity Council and the University.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon - March 6, 2008
The Student Affairs Committee (SAC) accepts the factual findings of the Interfraternity Council (IFC) that there was a hazing violation by Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. This violation occurred while Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity was on IFC recommended, and SAC affirmed, Critical Probation.
SAC considered the alternative recommendations of the IFC. SAC determined, by a majority, that a one-year suspension is appropriate in this case.
