Washington and Lee University

Board of Trustees' Resolution

Alcohol abuse and illegal drug use adversely affect the learning environment at Washington and Lee University. They compromise our students’ health, personal well-being and academic performance, and promote behavior that is inconsistent with time-honored traditions of civility and respect for the law. While the University strongly supports the concept of student governance, there are certain legal and moral parameters within which young men and women must function in order to maintain a civilized and safe community and to create a positive learning environment.

Consistent with the Board of Trustees’ Policy Statement on Substance Abuse adopted on May 19, 2001, the University has adopted and implemented disciplinary policies to reduce substance abuse at Washington and Lee University. These measures include:

  • A clear and unequivocal sanction for a conviction of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • A three-strike program for individuals and for Greek and other student organizations found in violation of University substance abuse policies by their respective adjudicating bodies.
  • Parental (or legal guardian) notification for undergraduate students found to have violated University alcohol/drug policies.
