WHERE THEY STAND: Despite a loss on Saturday, W&L still holds onto the seventh spot in the ODAC standings. The Generals take on Guilford (8th) and Eastern Mennonite (3rd) this week with a chance to further secure their post-season status.

W&L vs. GUILFORD:  This is the 29th meeting between Guilford and Washington and Lee, with the Quakers holding a 22-6 advantage in the all-time series.  However, the Generals defeated GC, 64-53, earlier this season in Lexington, Va.

SCOUTING THE QUAKERS:  Guilford enters this week’s contest with a 10-11 overall mark and a 5-11 record in ODAC play.  GC has hit a bit of a skid in the second half of the season and has lost 10 of its last 12 contests, including six-straight losses. On the season, junior forward Tracey Croner leads the Quakers with 12.5 points and 5.2 rebounds  per contest. Guilford connected on just one of its first 16 shots as W&L held a 16-point advantage (19-3) with 7:32 to play in the opening stanza en route to a 29-16 lead at the half. The Generals led by as many as 15 (33-18) with 18:41 remaining, but the Quakers rallied and cut the margin to single digits on several occasions, including getting as close as five points (47-42) with 5:56 to play. However, the Blue and White subsequently used a 9-1 run over the next 2:34 to take a 56-43 lead in securing the 11-point victory. The Generals out-rebounded GC, 55-43. Senior forward Kristen Krouchick paced four Generals in double-figures with 14 points and nine rebounds. Senior forward Amanda Kane tallied 11 points and a game-high five assists, while senior guard Emily Wolff and junior forward Kara Nadeau each added 10 markers. Nadeau also added nine rebounds. SCOUTING THE ROYALS:  EMU enters the week with an 16-5 overall mark (12-4 ODAC).  The Royals went 2-1 last week as they topped Hollins (85-36) and Guilford (78-56), but lost to Emory & Henry (63-58). EMU is led by junior forward Carolyn Riley’s conference-best 17.0 points per game.  Riley is also posting 6.9 rebounds per game (7th in ODAC).  Senior center Jolene Kratz (10.4 ppg) and senior guard Tara Jones (10.0 ppg) also average double figures for Eastern Mennonite.

LAST MEETING WITH EMU (1/15/08): Eastern Mennonite recovered from a 12-point first half deficit to post a 71-62 victory over Washington and Lee in Harrisonburg, Va. The Generals held a 24-12 lead with 8:16 remaining in the first half, but EMU used an 11-0 run to cut W&L’s advantage to one point, 24-23, with 5:50 remaining. The Generals responded with an 11-1 run and led 35-24 with 3:26 left, but the Royals closed out the first stanza with a 10-2 run to make it a three point game at the break, 37-34. EMU scored the first six points of the second half and took the lead 40-37 at 17:58 and never trailed for the rest of the game. The Royals led by as many as 14, 61-47, with 7:06 to play en route to the nine-point victory. The Generals were paced by junior guard Bethany Ridenhour, who amassed a season-high 19 points. LAST TIME OUT (2/9/08):   Roanoke used a 19-0 run midway through the second half en route to defeating Washington and Lee, 60-44, on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center. The opening minutes of the game featured four ties and five lead changes. Roanoke built a six-point lead two times in the closing 5:35 of the first period and held a 27-24 edge at the break. W&L out-scored the Maroons, 11-7, over the first 6:28 of the second half and led by one point, 35-34, with 13:32 left. However, RC then held W&L scoreless for the next 7:58 using the aforementioned run to take a 53-35 lead with 5:40 to play in claiming the 16-point victory.  The Blue and White, whose three-game winning streak was ended with the loss, were hampered by 23 turnovers and were out-rebounded by the Maroons, 41-33. Senior forward Kristen Krouchick paced the Generals with 16 points and eight rebounds. With her 16 points, Krouchick moves into fourth all-time in scoring at W&L with 1,266 career points, surpassing Megan Babst ‘02 (1,265). Junior guard Bethany Ridenhour also added 12 points.

KING OF THE GENERALS: Mandy King (Southern Maine ’98) is in her fifth season as head women’s basketball coach at W&L and has a career record of 56-68 (.452). King is assisted by Kristen McCandless (TCNJ ’03), who is in her third season.

UP NEXT: The Generals finish up the regular season with three games next week, taking on Hollins at home (2/19) and Emory & Henry (2/22) and Lynchburg (2/23) on the road.

WINNING WAYS: The statistics from the Generals ‘seven wins this season show the keys to victory for the Blue and White -- rebounding and defense. In all of the wins, W&L has out-rebounded its opponent and owns an +12.0 advantage on the boards in its seven wins. Also, in all but one win, the Generals have held their opponents to under 60 points.

“HURRIKANE” AMANDA: An athletic and physical player, senior forward Amanda Kane can be a devastating player on both ends of the floor. Of late, Kane has shown guard-like tendancies by averaging 4.5 assists over the last four games. During that four-game span, Kane handed out a career-high eight assists, along with 14 points, in a 82-69 win over E&H. This season, Kane is posting a second-best 9.9 ppg, along with 5.1 rpg and a team-high 2.8 apg.  For her career, Kane owns 578 points and 392 rebounds.

KAMP’S A CHAMP: Sophomore center Kaitlyn Kamp has had some knockout performances of late. Over the last four games, Kamp is averaging 7.5 points and 10.8 rebounds. In that stretch, she notched career-highs in points and rebounds (19 pts/17 rbs) in a win over Emory & Henry (2/5). Against E&H, Kamp shot 8-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the foul line en route to her career performance. Her double-double against E&H was the second of the season and the third of her career.  She has also posted double-figures in scoring four times and double-digits in rebounds three times in 07-08. This season, Kamp is averaging 5.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and she is shooting a second-best 51.1 percent (48-94) from the floor.

LET’S GO FOR A RIDE: Junior guard Bethany Ridenhour’s ability to provide a spark off the bench translated into earning a starting spot in the Roanoke game on Saturday. She tallied 12 points in the loss to the Maroons and has scored double-figures in seven contests so far this season. She also tied a season-high with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 shooting from the foul line in an 82-69 win over E&H on Tuesday. In the win over E&H, she also tied a career-high with eight assists. Additionally, Ridenhour racked up 19 points in a 71-62 loss to Eastern Mennonite (1/15), hitting 8-of-13 of her shots from the floor, including 3-of-5 from downtown. She has totaled a career-high nine rebounds on two occasions (at R-MC, BC). For the season, Ridenhour is averaging 9.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, a team-best 2.0 steals and 2.3 assists per contest.

GET OUT THE RED INK: As her senior season wraps up, it becomes increasingly apparent the assault senior forward Kristen Krouchick has had on the W&L record books. Below is where Krouchick, and fellow seniors Emily Wolff and Amanda Kane, figure into the all-time leaders at W&L.
