RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's swimming team was in action on the first day of the 2008 ODAC/Atlantic States Swimming Championship on Friday in Radford, Va., at the Dedmon Center.  After five events, W&L currently is in first place with 271 points.

The Generals were led by sophomore Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg), who competed on two winning relays and placed second in the 50 free (25.71).

Simpson teamed up with senior Amy Roberson (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches), freshman Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill. / New Trier) and sophomore Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) to win the 200 medley relay in a school record time of 1:41.58.

She and Roberson then joined juniors Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) and Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) to win the 400 medley relay in a time of 4:06.38, which was also good enough to set a new school record.

Additionally, Hayden also won the 500 free in a time of 5:18.61.

The Generals return to action on Saturday for the second day of the meet.
