
WHERE THEY STAND: The Generals have won four out of their last six games and despite a loss to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday still hold the seventh spot in the ODAC standings. W&L closes out the regular season by taking Hollins (11th), E&H (8th) and Lynchburg (5th).
KING OF THE GENERALS: Mandy King (Southern Maine ’98) is in her fifth season as head women’s basketball coach at W&L and has a career record of 57-69 (.452). King is assisted by Kristen McCandless (TCNJ ’03), who is in her third season.
W&L VS. HOLLINS: The Generals own a 22-6 all-time record vs. HU and defeated it twice last season. W&L has won the last seven contests with Hollins, dating back to 2004. That total includes an 80-50 win earlier this season.
SCOUTING HOLLINS: Hollins (0-21, 0-17) enters tonight’s contest coming off a 76-45 loss to Lynchburg on Saturday. On the season, freshman guard Tamara Phillips leads HU with 10.5 points and 3.6 assists per game. Senior forward Nicole Grant averages 11.7 ppg, but has only played in seven contests this season.
LAST MEETING WITH HOLLINS (12/4/07): Senior forward Amanda Kane led five W&L players in double-figures with 15 points as the Generals cruised to an 80-50 victory over Hollins. The Generals jumped out to a 38-10 lead with 5:40 remaining in the first half, but Hollins closed the opening stanza with a 16-6 run to cut it to a 44-26 game at the break. W&L answered the run with a 20-3 outburst in the opening 7:41 of the second half to open a 64-29 lead with 12:19 remaining in securing the 30-point win. Kane also grabbed five rebounds for the Generals, while freshman center Felice Herman posted11 points and grabbed a career-high 15 boards. Junior guard Bethany Ridenhour tallied 12 points and six assists, while senior guard Emily Wolff notched 11 points and a season-high five steals. Senior guard Kristen Krouchick also chipped in 10 points. Senior forward Nicole Grant recorded 18 points and seven rebounds, while freshman guard Tamara Phillips chipped in 12 points and four steals for Hollins.
LAST TIME OUT (2/16/08): W&L senior forward Kristen Krouchick recorded a team-high 16 points and tied a career-high with 13 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as Eastern Mennonite defeated the Generals, 62-46, at the Warner Center. The Royals used solid first-half shooting, draining six threes (6-11) and shooting 48.1 percent (14-29) from the field, to build a 13-point lead at the break (37-24). After EMU extended its lead to as many as 17 points (41-24) with 18:56 to play in the contest, the Generals out-scored EMU, 11-3, to make it a nine-point game (44-35) with 10:47 left in the contest. However, Eastern Mennonite promptly went on a 9-2 run over the following 3:09 to take a 53-37 lead with 6:38 to go and never trailed by less than 11 markers for the remainder of the contest. EMU out-rebounded the Generals, 35-31, and forced 17 W&L turnovers. Krouchick was joined in double-figure scoring by junior guard Bethany Ridenhour, who added 11 points and four assists for W&L.
W&L VS. EMORY & HENRY: This is the 29th meeting between the Generals and the Wasps. E&H holds a 17-11 advantage in the all-time series, but W&L has won the last three meetings, including an 80-69 victory earlier this season.
SCOUTING THE WASPS: E&H split its contests last week, downing Roanoke (66-57) and falling to Lynchburg (73-63). The Wasps enter this week with an 8-15 overall mark (6-12 ODAC). They travel to Guilford on Tuesday before the Generals come to Emory, Va., on Friday. Sophomore guard Sarah Petty leads E&H this season, averaging 12.9 points and 5.6 rebounds per outing. Sophomore forward Alex Lyons adds a team-high 5.9 rpg and 9.3 ppg.
LAST MEETING WITH E&H (2/5/08): Sophomore center Kaitlyn Kamp totaled career highs in points (19) and rebounds (17) as Washington and Lee posted an 82-69 victory over Emory & Henry at the Warner Center. The Generals used a hot-shooting first half (60.0, 21-35) to take a 50-27 lead into the break and continued to hold a double-digit advantage throughout the second half. W&L’s 50-point first half was its largest opening-stanza output since a 59-point first half against Lesley in 2000-01. Additionally, the Generals posted a season-high 26 assists and out-rebounded E&H, 41-31. Kamp hit 8-of-10 of her attempts from the floor and was 3-of-4 from the foul line en route to her career night. Junior guard Bethany Ridenhour, and senior forwards Kristen Krouchick and Amanda Kane also posted double-digits in scoring for the Generals. Ridenhour tied a season-high with 19 points and tallied six assists. Krouchick notched 15 points and five assists, while Kane registered 14 points and a career-high eight assists. E&H was paced by sophomores Alex Lyons and Sarah Petty, who each dropped in 21 points.
W&L VS. LYNCHBURG: The Generals own a slight 14-13 edge in the all-time series after LC won the initial meeting this season, 62-53.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS: LC (14-8, 11-6) went 2-1 last week, defeating both E&H (67-63) and Hollins (76-45) and losing to Virginia Wesleyan (56-60). The Hornets take on Randolph on Tuesday and Randolph-Macon on Friday before hosting the Generals on Saturday. On the season, LC is paced by sophomore forward Brittany Dahn’s 16. 2 points (3rd in ODAC) and conference-best 11.9 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kristina Darby is averaging 11.8 points and a team-high 3.2 assists per contest.
LAST MEETING WITH LC (1/18/08): LC sophomore forward Brittany Dahn tallied 16 points and nine rebounds as the Hornets downed W&L, 62-53, at the Warner Center. The Generals scored the first seven points of the contest, however, Lynchburg rattled off an 18-2 run to take an 18-9 advantage with 6:55 remaining in the opening half. The Generals cut the lead to one, 18-17, at 4:18, but the Hornets held on for a five-point lead at the break. W&L began the second half with a 10-4 spurt to take a 31-30 lead with 17:05 to play in the contest, but that would be its only lead of the second half as LC subsequently out-scored W&L, 16-5, over the next 5:58 to take a 10-point lead (46-36) at 11:47. The Generals managed to cut it to a three-point game (50-47) on a trey from senior forward Amanda Kane, but the Hornets went six-for-six from the charity stripe in the final 4:11 to hold on for the win. The Blue and White were paced by Kane, senior forward Kristen Krouchick and junior guard Bethany Ridenhour, who each had nine points. Lynchburg was lead by Dahn, who also registered a team-high four assists, to go with her 16 points. Freshman guard Courtney Brewer posted 13 points, 11 in the second stanza, while sophomore guard Chevonne Booker added 11 markers.
“HURRIKANE” AMANDA: An athletic and physical player, senior forward Amanda Kane can be a devastating player on both ends of the floor. Recently, she showed how threatening she can be on offense by pouring in a career-high 26 points, draining 5-of-8 from long range, in an 86-61 win over Guilford. Kane pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds in a loss at Bridgewater and racked up a career-high eight assists in an 82-69 win over E&H. This season, Kane is posting a second-best 10.5 ppg, along with 5.3 rpg and 2.6 apg. For her career, Kane owns 610 points and 407 rebounds.
KAMP’S A CHAMP: Sophomore center Kaitlyn Kamp recently had a knockout performance, notching career-highs in points and rebounds (19 pts/17 rbs) in a win over Emory & Henry (2/5). Against E&H, Kamp shot 8-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the foul line en route to her career performance. She has also posted double-figures in scoring four times and double-digits in rebounds three times in 07-08. This season, Kamp is averaging 5.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game and she is shooting a second-best 51.5 percent (52-101) from the floor.
DE LONE RANGER: A Delone Catholic graduate, center Felice Herman is already making her mark as a freshman. In a 86-61 win at Guilford, Herman totaled a career-high 14 points and added eight rebounds. Also, she recorded her first-ever double-double in a win over Hollins (12/4) with 11 points and a career-high 15 boards. This season, Herman is averaging 6.5 ppg and 4.6 rpg and owns a team-best 58.2 field-goal percentage (57-98). Her field-goal percentage is on pace to set a new W&L single-season record (record is 57.3).
LET’S GO FOR A RIDE: Junior guard Bethany Ridenhour’s ability to provide a spark off the bench translated into earning a starting spot in the last three contests. Against Guilford, she scored 18 points, all in the first half, and dished out a career-high eight assists. She has scored double-figures in nine contests so far this season. She tied a season-high with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 shooting from the foul line in an 82-69 win over E&H (2/5). In the win over E&H, she also tied a career-high with eight assists. Additionally, Ridenhour racked up 19 points in a 71-62 loss to Eastern Mennonite (1/15), hitting 8-of-13 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from downtown. For the season, Ridenhour is averaging 9.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, a team-best 2.0 steals and 2.6 assists per contest.
GET OUT THE RED INK: As her senior season wraps up, it becomes increasingly apparent the assault senior forward Kristen Krouchick has had on the W&L record books. . She is the only player at W&L to record over 1,000 career points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 150 steals, currently owning 1,291 points, 562 rebounds, 201 assists and 164 steals.
