KING OF THE GENERALS: Mandy King (Southern Maine ’98) is in her fifth season as head women’s basketball coach at W&L and has a career record of 58-71 (.449). King is assisted by Kristen McCandless (TCNJ ’03), who is in her third season.
LAST TIME OUT (2/23/08): Lynchburg College freshman forward Kylie Lucas scored the go-ahead basket in overtime to lead the Hornets to a 76-71 win over W&L on Saturday in Lynchburg, Va. In the extra session, junior forward Kara Nadeau connected on two foul shots to give W&L its first lead of the contest, 66-64, with 4:51 remaining. However, LC would go on to tie the contest (66-66) on a lay-up by sophomore guard Kristina Darby at 3:26 and Lucas’ lay-up gave LC a 68-67 lead with 2:25 to play. The Hornets would not relinquish the lead in the final minutes in securing the five-point victory. Lynchburg led by as many 13 points in the second half (43-30) at 16:06, but W&L outscored LC, 24-7, over the following 10:11 to cut the score to 55-54 at the 5:55 mark. Lynchburg pushed out to a 63-55 lead, but the Generals rallied with a 9-2 spurt to tie the game at 64-64 on a lay-up by freshman center Alex Harper with 26.2 seconds left in regulation. Lynchburg scored the first six points of the contest en route to building a 33-15 lead with 3:56 to play in the opening half. However, the Generals countered with a 10-2 run to cut the LC advantage to 35-25 at the break. W&L placed five players in double figures led by senior forward Amanda Kane, who totaled a team-high 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Nadeau racked up 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, while senior forward Kristen Krouchick totaled 12 points. Harper set a career-high with 12 points and senior guard Emily Wolff added 10 points.
W&L vs. R-MC: The Yellow Jackets own a 28-4 advantage in the all-time series and have won the past 15 meetings. R-MC has not lost to the Generals since a 76-71 double-overtime contest on Dec. 1, 2001 in Lexington, Va., and W&L has never defeated R-MC in the ODAC Tournament.
SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS: Randolph-Macon enters the 2008 ODAC Tournament with a 21-4 overall record after posting a 16-4 mark in the conference. Last week, the Yellow Jackets lost to Eastern Mennonite, 79-74, on Tuesday, but rebounded to defeat Lynchburg (90-71) and Hollins (92-44) over the weekend. On the season, R-MC has three players averaging double-digits in scoring, led by sophomore center Molly Ariail’s 16.8 points (second in ODAC) and 8.4 rebounds a contest. Junior guard Amanda Hiltunen is contributing 13.0 ppg, while junior forward Lindsay Riesbeck is adding 12.8 points a contest.
LAST MEETING WITH R-MC - PART ONE (11/30/07): Sophomore center Molly Ariail paced four Randolph-Macon players in double-figures with 17 points as the then 22nd-ranked Yellow Jackets defeated Washington and Lee, 81-57, at the Warner Center. Randolph-Macon connected on 54.5 percent (18-33) of its first half shots and led by as many as 18 points (23-5 at 10:53; 25-7 at 9:04) in the first half. After taking a 40-26 lead into the break, the Yellow Jackets held the Generals to just one field goal in the opening 10:22 of the second half and cruised to the 24-point victory. R-MC shot 52.5 percent (32-61) for the game and forced 22 W&L turnovers. Ariail shot 8-for-14 from the floor en route to her 17 markers. Senior guard Jess Shifflett notched 14 points, while junior guard Amanda Hiltunen totaled 11 points. Junior forward Lindsay Riesbeck added 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Junior guard Bethany Ridenhour scored 16 points for W&L to go along with four steals, while freshman guard Allie Long posted 11 points.
LAST MEETING WITH R-MC - PART DEUX (1/22/08): Sophomore center Molly Ariail tallied 17 points, eight rebounds and five steals to lead then 20th-ranked Randolph-Macon to a 68-57 victory over Washington and Lee in Ashland, Va. The game was tight early on and featured eight lead changes and three ties in the first half until the Yellow Jackets stretched out to a seven-point (30-23) advantage at the break. The Generals began the second stanza with a 9-4 run sparked by nine points from senior forward Amanda Kane to cut it to a 34-32 game with 13:46 remaining, but R-MC methodically pushed out to an 11-point lead (46-35) with 6:46 to go. W&L cut it to seven points on two occasions in the final six minutes, but could get no closer as the Yellow Jackets nailed 8-of-9 free throws in the final 1:30 to seal the win. The Generals limited Randolph-Macon to just 38.1 percent (24-63) shooting from the floor, but could not overcome 24 turnovers. Senior forward Kristen Krouchick led W&L with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Kane tallied 14 points, 13 of which were scored in the second half. Junior guard Bethany Ridenhour added 10 points. Ariail went 9-for-9 from the foul line in leading the Yellow Jackets. Junior guard Amanda Hiltunen amassed 15 points, while junior forward Lindsay Riesbeck chipped in 12 points.
W&L IN THE ODAC TOURNAMENT: W&L has played 11 ODAC Tournament games in its 14 years of eligibility for the postseason tournament. The Generals have compiled an all-time record of 2-9 and have yet to defeat R-MC in the post-season. Here is how the Generals have faired in the ODAC Tournament over the years:
Guilford (0-1) Randolph-Macon (0-4) Emory & Henry (0-1)
Roanoke (0-1) Virginia Wesleyan (1-1) Eastern Mennonite (1-1)
W&L’S LAST TOURNAMENT GAME VS. R-MC (2/23/06): The top-seeded and eighth-ranked Randolph-Macon women’s basketball team went on a 16-9 run over the final seven minutes en route to a 79-71 victory over eighth-seeded Washington and Lee in the quarterfinals of the 2006 ODAC Tournament the Salem Civic Center. The Generals led 12-10 with 13:32 remaining in the first half, but the Yellow Jackets went on a 25-7 run over the next 8:53 to take a 16-point edge (35-19) at the 4:39 mark. W&L clawed back to trail by just nine points (39-30) heading into halftime. The Generals opened the second half on a 13-4 spurt to knot the game at 43-43 with 16:11 left and took a 45-43 advantage on a layup by guard Louisa Feve at the 14:51 mark. On its next possession, R-MC guard Megan Silva buried a three-pointer to give the Yellow Jackets a 46-45 lead. R-MC pushed its lead to five points (61-56) with 9:19 left, but the Generals got within 63-62 at the 7:00 mark on a layup by center Jessica Hunsinger. From there, the Yellow Jackets went on the aforementioned 16-9 run in posting the eight-point win. W&L shot 42.3 percent (30-of-71) from the field and pulled down 43 rebounds, including 21 offensive boards. R-MC shot 48.5 percent (33-of-68) from the floor, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, and grabbed 35 rebounds. The Generals were led by forward Kristen Krouchick, who scored a team-high 21 points, dished out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds. Hunsinger finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, while Feve notched 16 points, nine rebounds, a game-high eight assists and a game-best five steals. Silva paced the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 22 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals. Forward Michelle Orton totaled 16 points and nine rebounds, while guard Amanda Hiltunen chipped in with 12 points.
W&L’S LAST TOURNAMENT APPEARANCE (2/23/07): VWC forward Heather Phillips scored a game-high 23 points to lead second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan to a 73-62 victory over sixth-seeded Washington and Lee in the semifinals of the 2007 ODAC Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Salem Civic Center. The Generals started strong and led 25-21 with 7:10 remaining in the first period, but the Marlins closed the half with an 18-4 run to assume a 39-29 lead at the break. Virginia Wesleyan extended its lead to 15 points (45-30) just over a minute into the second half and held a 51-38 advantage with 15:22 to play. However, W&L immediately went on an 11-0 run highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from forward Hayley James to slice the VWC lead to 51-49 with 12:02 left. That would be as close as the Generals would get the rest of the way as a quick 9-0 run for the Marlins gave them a 60-49 lead with 7:50 remaining and they maintained a double-digit lead for much of the remaining time. The Generals were led by forward Kristen Krouchick, who tallied 14 points and six rebounds. Center Jessica Hunsinger totaled 12 points and seven rebounds, while guard Emily Wolff also posted 12 points. James chipped in 10 points and nine boards. Phillips was joined in double-figures by guard Chelsey Barrett, who registered 10 points.
IT’S BEEN A WHILE: The Generals’ 82-81 overtime loss to Emory & Henry was the first time W&L has lost when scoring 80+ points since a 91-83 loss to Guilford on 1/15/00.
AND ... IT’S NEVER HAPPENED: With W&L’s 76-71 overtime loss to Lynchburg on Saturday, the Generals played their second-straight overtime game and third of the season. The Blue and White have never played more than two OT contests in a season and have never played back-to-back extra sessions contests in program history.
KARA’S CAREER NIGHT: Despite losing to E&H in overtime, the bright spot in the loss was the breakout of junior forward Kara Nadeau, who set career-highs in nearly every statistical category. She tallied a career-best 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and 4-of-4 from the foul line. She also notched a career-high seven assists, tied a career-high with six steals and totaled seven rebounds. Nadeau followed up that performance with a 13-point, 13-rebound (career-high) outing in a 76-71 overtime loss to Lynchburg. For the season, Nadeau is averaging 5.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game.
“HURRIKANE” AMANDA: An athletic and physical player, senior forward Amanda Kane can be a devastating player on both ends of the floor. Recently, she showed how threatening she can be on offense by pouring in a career-high 26 points, draining 5-of-8 from long range, in an 86-61 win over Guilford. Kane pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds in a loss at Bridgewater and racked up a career-high eight assists in an 82-69 win over E&H. This season, Kane is posting a second-best 10.4 ppg, along with 5.6 rpg and 2.5 apg. For her career, Kane owns 640 points and 430 rebounds.
DE LONE RANGER: A Delone Catholic graduate, center Felice Herman is already making her mark as a freshman. She tallied the second double-double of her career (10 pts., 12 rbs.) in a win over Hollins on Tuesday. Also, she recorded her first double-double in a win over Hollins (12/4) with 11 points and a career-high 15 boards. This season, Herman is averaging 6.2 ppg and 5.0 rpg and owns a team-best 58.3 field-goal percentage (63-108). Her field-goal percentage is on pace to set a new W&L single-season record (record is 57.3).
KAMP’S A CHAMP: Sophomore center Kaitlyn Kamp recently had a knockout performance, notching career-highs in points and rebounds (19 pts/17 rbs) in a win over Emory & Henry (2/5). Against E&H, Kamp shot 8-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the foul line en route to her career performance. She has also posted double-figures in scoring four times and double-digits in rebounds three times in 07-08. This season, Kamp is averaging 5.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game and she is shooting a second-best 50.4 percent (58-115) from the floor.
SOMETHING TO HARP ON: Freshman center Alex Harper’s performance against Lynchburg is something other teams may have to dwell on when preparing their scouting reports. Harper scored a career-high 12 points, including draining the game-tying lay-up that sent the contest to overtime. Harper connected on 4-of-6 of her shots from the floor and was 4-of-4 from the foul line in the contests. On the season, she leads the Generals with a .786 (11-14) free-throw percentage and averages 3.1 points and 2.0 rebounds a game.
LET’S GO FOR A RIDE: Junior guard Bethany Ridenhour’s ability to provide a spark off the bench translated into earning a starting spot in the last six contests. Against Guilford, she scored 18 points, all in the first half, and dished out a career-high eight assists. She has scored double-figures in 10 contests so far this season. She tied a season-high with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 shooting from the foul line in an 82-69 win over E&H (2/5). In the win over E&H, she also tied a career-high with eight assists. Additionally, Ridenhour racked up 19 points in a 71-62 loss to Eastern Mennonite (1/15), hitting 8-of-13 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from downtown. For the season, Ridenhour is averaging 9.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, a team-best 1.9 steals and 2.8 assists per contest.
GET OUT THE RED INK: As her senior season wraps up, it becomes increasingly apparent the assault senior forward Kristen Krouchick has had on the W&L record books. She recently moved into third place all-time at W&L in scoring. She is the only player at W&L to record over 1,000 career points, 550 rebounds, 200 assists and 150 steals, currently owning 1,319 points, 575 rebounds, 209 assists and 169 steals.
