The Department of Philosophy at Washington and Lee University seeks to introduce students to deep and persistent questions of existence, knowledge, and value, to encourage students to examine critically a variety of beliefs, attitudes, and social structures, and to foster creative thoughtfulness and self-reflection.
Philosophy is a fundamental subject matter, and its study equips any student for work in a wide variety of fields. In addition to going to graduate school in philosophy, our majors have gone on to pursue careers in law, education, information technology, banking, advertising, health sciences, and the armed forces.
