Frequently Asked Questions

Q.) Can I meet with a Financial Aid staff member during Accepted Students day?

The Financial Aid Staff will be available for appointments on Admitted Students Day, Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008. Because of the large numbers of students and parents who wish to meet with the staff, we will also be available for appointments in the morning of April 24. Appointments are limited to 15 minutes, so we suggest that any potentially complicated issues to be discussed be prefaced with an e-mail or telephone call to the appropriate staff member.

Staff emails are as follows with special areas of emphasis:

Appointments can be made on-line at Financial Aid Appointments. Alternatively, you may contact Martha Rowsey in the Financial Aid office at 540-458-8717 to arrange an appointment over the phone.

Q.) When will I know my full Financial Aid Award?

Financial aid award letters are sent within a week of the Admissions office acceptance letters. If you have applied for financial aid and submitted all the required documentation, you should receive your award notification soon after April 1. A complete application for financial aid includes the CSS profile and tax returns for 2005 and 2006. The FAFSA and your 2007 tax returns are also required when you have completed your current year taxes. Please return your signed award letter to the Financial Aid office as soon as you have made the decision to attend W&L. Your financial aid award cannot be confirmed until your award letter is returned and tax returns have been received and reconciled by the Financial Aid Office. Please call our office at (540) 458-8717 if you have any questions regarding your financial aid award letter.

Q.) What is Campus Employment (Work Study)?

Campus employment at Washington and Lee University is offered to most students who have received financial aid. If your award letter contains an offer for participation in the campus employment program, and you are interested in working, then accept the award (circle the ‘A’) and return the award letter to the Financial Aid office. The Financial Aid Office will contact you in June-July with more details regarding the program and work assignments. If you have not been offered campus employment on your award letter and would like to participate in the program please contact the Financial Aid Office @ 540-458-8717. If you have additional questions about campus employment that are not addressed above please contact Jim Kaster @ 540-458-8720.

Q.) How do I obtain a Stafford or PLUS Loan?

Do not do anything at this point regarding loan applications. The Financial Aid Office will be mailing detailed information in late May.

If a loan is included in your financial aid award package, do not proceed to apply for a loan until you have heard from the Financial Aid Office in late May.

Q.) With whom should I speak regarding my Financial Aid Award?

The Office of Financial Aid will set aside time on Wednesday, April 23rd for parents attending the Accepted Students Day. You may schedule a meeting time on-line at Financial Aid Appointments. Alternatively, you may contact Martha Rowsey in the Financial Aid office at 540-458-8717 to arrange an appointment over the phone.
