
LEXINGTON, Va.—The second-seeded Roanoke College women’s lacrosse team used a six-goal spurt in the first-half to claim a 15-11 victory over third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan in the semifinals of the 2008 ODAC Tournament on Saturday. The game spanned over six and a half hours and featured multiple delays due to lightning. The contest began at Watt Field and ended at the W&L Turf Field.
The Marlins (12-6) struck first at 27:31 when junior attacker Bethany Adomanis (Arnold, Md./Severn Archbishop Spalding) scored on a free-position shot. The game was delayed following that goal and did not restart for over two hours.
Following the delay, Roanoke began the aforementioned run with senior attacker Amanda Hutchins (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and sophomore midfielder Gina Valles (South Windsor, Conn./Westminster) each adding two goals in the series as the Maroons jumped out to a 6-1 lead at 3:25. VWC responded, scoring three out of the next four goals, to cut the RC edge to 7-4 at the half.
Roanoke (10-7) began the second half with two goals from Valles to take a 9-4 lead at 27:49, however, the Marlins answered with three strikes of their own to tighten the contest to 9-7 with 17:18 remaining. RC's sophomore attacker Brookes Laufman (Annapolis, Md./Severn) found the back of the net at 16:28 to put the Maroons up by three (10-7). Following Laufman's score, the game was paused again due to lightning and moved from Watt Field to the W&L Turf Field.
When the contest restarted over two hours later, Valles made it a four-goal lead (11-7) at 13:15. VWC cut it to a four-point game (14-11) at 3:25. but could get no closer as the Maroons advanced to the finals for the second-straight year.
The Maroons were led by Valles, who totaled six goals and one assist. Hutchins, sophomore attacker Brooks Laufman (Annapolis, Md./Severn) and sophomore attacker Sunni Ray (Severna Park, Md./Severn) each added two goals, while sophomore midfielder Paige Mason (Orangeville, Canada/Orangeville) chipped in one goal and dished out two assists. Junior goalkeeper Katlyn Scarlett (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul’s School for Girls) played the entire game and stopped 12 shots.
The Marlins were paced by junior midfielder Aimee Sraver (Timonium, Md./St. Paul’s School for Girls), who notched four goals. Adomanis and senior midfielder Jillian Boyd (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) both added two goals each. Junior Ashley Sippel (Leesburg, Va./Ashburn Stone Bridge) played 60:00 minutes between the pipes and stopped seven shots.
Roanoke will take on sixth-ranked Washington and Lee in the finals of the 2008 ODAC Tournament for the second-straight year. The game time has been changed due to the circumstances from the semifinal game and will now start at 2:30 pm on Sunday.
