LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore forward Erin Hench (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) netted the game-winning goal with eight seconds remaining in overtime to lead No. 1 Messiah to a 4-3 win over Washington and Lee in women’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Falcons (8-0-2) got on board first when senior midfielder Kacie Klynstra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) found sophomore forward Joanna Haqq (Belchertown, Mass./Home School), who sent one past senior netminder Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) at 9:46. The Generals responded when senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) connected with junior midfielder Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy), who slipped one past senior goalkeeper Brindley Beckwith (Upper Montclair, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic) at 34:58. First-year defender Corinne Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) then netted a goal off of a Van Devender corner at 43:09 to give the Generals a 2-1 advantage going into the half.
W&L (4-3) held onto the one-goal advantage until 65:04 when Messiah’s first-year forward Rachel Loya (Verona, Pa./Penn Hills) snuck an unassisted shot past Moreo to tie the contest, 2-2. Van Devender answered back 10:12 later when she scored unassisted to put the Generals back on top (3-2). However, Hench tallied the tying-goal at 82:32 to send the contest into an extra session and then the game-winning marker at 99:52 to give the Falcons the victory.
