MARYVILLE, Tenn. – First-year midfielder Chris Burgin (Atlantic Beach, Fla./Episcopal) notched the game-winning goal in the 68th minute to lead the Washington and Lee men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Maryville on Sunday afternoon in Maryville, Tenn.
W&L (3-0) got on board first when senior forward Whitt Larkin (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) connected on a free kick at 26:45. The Scots (4-1) responded 2:59 later when junior forward Zak Petersen found junior midfielder Mitchell Gray, who slipped the tying-goal past W&L sophomore netminder Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./Towson) to knot the score, 1-1. However, the Generals took the final lead when Burgin scored the game-winner unassisted at 68:23, and W&L held on to post the one-goal victory.
