Accreditation

Washington and Lee University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, GA 30033-4097, (404) 679-4501) to award the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Juris Doctor, and Master of Laws. W&L is also accredited by AACSB International (the association for management education); the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications; and the American Chemical Society. The School of Law is a member of the Association of American Law Schools and is approved by the American Bar Association.

Athletics

W&L competes at the NCAA Division III level, where all financial aid is based on family need and academic merit. Most of W&L's 23 teams compete in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, a 14-team league, with most schools located in Virginia. W&L offers the following varsity sports:

Campus and Location

The University is located in the historic city of Lexington (population 7,000) in the Great Valley of Virginia about three hours southwest of Washington, D.C. W&L’s 35 principal buildings include the picturesque Washington College group forming the Colonnade facing Lee Chapel, where Robert E. Lee is buried. The Colonnade and Lee Chapel are National Historic Landmarks. New or recently renovated buildings include the John W. Elrod University Commons, the journalism department's Reid Hall, the Doremus fitness center and Wilson Hall, the fine arts and music center.

The Honor System at W&L

The Honor System is an integral part of student life and is entirely student-run. The Honor System is based on the fundamental principle of mutual trust among students, faculty and staff that students attending Washington and Lee will not lie, cheat, steal or otherwise act dishonorably.

  • Wilbur Hall Law Library: 428,517 volumes, microforms and CD-ROMs.
  • The Science Library provides access to encyclopedias, dictionaries, online sources covering the sciences, indexes and databases, periodical indexes, select online journals and current periodicals.

Student Life
