W&L Men's Swimming Defeats Transylvania to Open Season 2-0

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The W&L men’s and women’s swim teams took part in a dual meet with Transylvania on Friday evening and both teams came away with victories. The men improved to 2-0 with a 127-76 win, while the women evened their ledger at 1-1 with a 116-89 triumph.

First-year Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) was a double-winner for the women as she took the 100 breast in a school-record time of 1:08.96 and the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.47.

Also winning for the Generals were seniors Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) in the 100 back (1:03.26) and Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) in the 100 fly (1:02.81). Sophomore Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) was a winner in the 500 free, touching in 5:26.38, while classmate Lauren Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Preparatory) won the 1000 free in 11:07.99.

The W&L women also received one relay win as the 200 medley team of Strachan, Fredericks, Miata and junior Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) recorded a 1:55.32 on its way to victory.

On the men’s side, junior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) recorded an individual win and was a part of two winning relays to lead the Generals to their second win in as many chances.

Talluri won the 100 free in 49.73 and teamed with first-years Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and Bradley Harder (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) and junior Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) to take the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.40. The 200 free relay won with a time of 1:30.05 and consisted of Talluri, Stirling, senior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton) and junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee South).

Barnds was an individual winner in the 50 free (22.68), and was clocked at 1:03.12 in taking the 100 breast. Senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) recorded a time of 10:28.93 in winning the 1000 free. First-year Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) won the 200 free with a time of 1:48.58 and sophomore Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) rounded out the winners for W&L with a victory in the 100 fly (55.19).

Both the men’s and women’s teams are in action on Saturday in a tri-meet with DePauw and Centre. The meet, which is being held at the University of Louisville, is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
