W&L Men's Swimming in First Place After Day One of BMC Meet
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee men’s swimming team opened the first day of the 2009 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships on Wednesday evening at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club in Charlotte, N.C.
After the first day of competition, the Generals find themselves in first place after placing four swimmers in the Top 8 of the 1000 free. Junior Dan Austin (Terrance Park, Ohio/Mariemont) paced W&L with a second-place finish in a school record time of 9:40.92, breaking the old mark by three seconds. Junior Jonathan Giesen (Hoover, Ala./Paul Laurence Dunbar) took fourth (9:44.97), first-year Frank Cullo (Sewickley, Pa./Central Catholic) came in fifth (9:46.98) and first-year Ben Absher (Knoxville, Tenn./Christian Academy) recorded an eighth-place finish with a time of 9:57.13.
W&L returns to action on Thursday for the second day of the conference meet. Events are slated to begin at 10:00 am.
