CHAROTTE, N.C. -- After two days of competition, the Washington and Lee men’s swimming team finds itself in first-place out of 14 teams with a total of 202 points at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship meet being held at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Club in Charlotte N.C.
Washington and Lee leads Limestone College, 202-190.5, heading into the third day of competition.
The team of senior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton), juniors Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) and Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee) and first-year Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook) began the day with a fourth-place finish in the 200 free relay with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:23.26. Talluri's lead off time of 21.16 in the preliminary round was an NCAA "B" cut time for the 50 free.
Senior Paul Crook took fourth in the 500 free with an NCAA “B” cut time of 4:35.54 and also notched an eighth place finish in the 200 individual medley with a mark of 2:02.16. In the preliminary round, he swam a "B" cut time of 1:55.01 in the 200 IM.
Barnds and Dexter both recorded NCAA “B” cut times in the 50 free in finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. Barnds touched in 20.92, while Dexter finished in 21.15.
Senior Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Lansdale Catholic) was joined by Crook and first-years Robert Grattan (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) and Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) in taking fifth in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:29.42. The foursome swam an NCAA "B" cut time of 3:28.76 in prelims.
W&L returns to the pool on Friday for the third day of the BMC meet. Events are slated to begin at 10:00 am.
