Christopher WashnockCharlotte, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee men’s swimming team wrapped up competition at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship meet held at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Club in Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday and came away with a third-place team finish.
W&L garnered a total of 547 points over the four-day event. Wingate University was the team champion with 657.5 points, while the University of Tampa took second with 552 points. W&L (547), Limestone College (498.5) and Savannah College of Art & Design (266) round out the Top 5.
The Generals placed four swimmers in the Top 10 of the 1650 free as first-year Frank Cullo (Sewickley, Pa./Central Catholic) took sixth in an NCAA “B” cut time of 16:18.97, junior Dan Austin (Terrance Park, Ohio/Mariemont) took seventh in 16:23.59, first-year Ben Absher (Knoxville, Tenn./Christian Academy) grabbed eighth-place in 16:36.28 and junior Jonathan Giesen (Hoover, Ala./Paul Laurence Dunbar) touched in 16:38.65 for ninth-place.
First-year Christopher Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) recorded a third-place finish in the 200 back with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:51.84 and senior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton) notched a 1:55.33 for an eighth-place finish.
The 100 free yielded three finishes in the Top 10 as junior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) swam a 46.57 for a sixth-place finish, first-year Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook) came in eighth with a time of 47.09 and junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee), swimming in the “B” final, recorded and NCAA “B” cut time of 45.77.
The Generals final NCAA “B” cut time came in the 400 free relay as Barnds, Talluri, senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) and first-year Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) posted a time of 3:02.83.
The W&L men’s swimming team returns to action as those athletes that qualified will compete in the NCAA Championships beginning on March 18.
