W&L Women's Swimming On Top After Day Two of ODAC Meet
Lynn BazzelRADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s swimming team continued its strong showing at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday evening.
After breaking three records and tying another on the opening day, W&L set three more school record and is leading the event with 666 points. Randolph-Macon sits in second with 467 points.
The 800 free relay team of junior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg), senior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines), sophomore Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and first-year Lauren Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Preparatory) set a new school and ODAC standard with a time of 8:00.00, besting the old school mark by over seven seconds.
Simpson was also part of the record-breaking 200 medley relay team as they set a new school and ODAC-record with a time of 1:49.13. Seniors Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) and Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) and junior Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) were also a part of the team.
Individual winners for W&L included senior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine’s) in the 400 individual medley as she notched a time of 4:45.04. Miata won the 100 fly in 1:00.46, Starnes took the 200 free in 1:57.63, Bazzel, set a new school-mark in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.41, and Strachan with a 58.13 in the 100 back.
The W&L women will wrap up competition at the ODAC Championship meet beginning Sunday morning.
