W&L Indoor Track & Field Teams In Action at the Lafayette-Rider Winter Games

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's indoor track & field teams were in action against Division I, II and III competition at the Lafayette-Rider Winter Games on Friday at the New York City Armory.

The Generals produced 13 Top 5 performances, set seven school records and had one athlete qualify for NCAA's.

The women were paced by senior Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield), who placed first among Div. III athletes in the mile with a NCAA-qualifying and school record time of 5:00.91. Webb also crossed the tape in 2:20.63 in the 800 meters for another first-place nod. Senior Stacy Doornbos (Roswell, Ga./Lassiter) recorded a third-place finish in the 400 meters in a school-record time of 59.36 and a fourth-place mark in the 200 meters in a school-record time of 26.63. Doornbos, senior Tara Hildenbrand (Castroville, Texas/Medina Valley), junior Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's) and first-year Natalie Stier (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) were also members of the school-record setting 4x400 meter relay team that finished in 4:08.14 for a second-place finish. Senior Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) rounded out the top performers on the women's side running a personal-best in the mile (5:14.59) to finish in third place.

On the men's side, senior Vance Berry (Porte Vedra, Fla./Episcopal) posted a fourth-place finish among Div. III competitors in the 5,000 meters in a school-record time of 15:25.37. Junior Billy Billington (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) finished second in the weight throw with a toss of 14.71 meters, while first-year Matt Gossett (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan) placed fifth in the mile (4:25.56). The men's 4x400 meter relay team of senior Chip McCoy (Litchfield, Conn./Litchfield), junior Ryan Castle (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville), sophomore Jeff Giordano (Slidell, La./Jesuit) and first-year Tyler Grant (Sewanee, Ga./South Forsyth) also set a school-record with a fifth-place finish (3:28.25).

The women return to action on Friday when two athletes compete in the pentathlon at the University of Chicago. Pentathlon events begin at 7:00 pm. The W&L men's and women's squads both return on Sat., Feb. 21 at the Virginia Tech Challenge. Events are slated to start at 10:00 am.
