LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games with a 3-0 win over cross-town rival Virginia Military Institute on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (6-1-2), who had not defeated Division I VMI since 2001, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of play as a shot from junior midfielder Tommy Pignatelli (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) was blocked by VMI goalkeeper Brian Sowell (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) and deflected to senior forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown), who found the back of the net from close range.
W&L extended its lead in the second half as Pignatelli scored off another Sowell deflection at 47:52. The Blue and White added another insurance goal in the 73rd minute when a corner kick from Pignatelli set up a goal by senior midfielder Travis Short (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill).
The Generals held a 27-8 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) made six saves as he picked up his second shutout of the season. Sowell made six stops for the Keydets (4-3-1).
W&L returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Roanoke at 11:00 am.
