W&L Cross Country Sweeps ODAC Championships

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams swept the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships for the fourth-straight year as both teams won their respective races on Saturday morning at the Dick Miller Cross Country Course.

The W&L men finished first out of nine teams paced by junior Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) and senior Tom Brower (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy), who finished second and third, respectively. Lynchburg’s Ricky Flynn won the men’s race, crossing the finish line in 27:23.18, followed by Welsh (27:56.35) and Brower (28:03.97).

Juniors Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Episcopal) and Alex Jackson (Centreville, Va./Westfield) and senior Andrew Friski (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) joined Welsh and Brower on the All-ODAC team for W&L. Berry finished sixth with a time of 28:33.19, Jackson placed 13th with a time of 29:26.50 and Friski finished 14th (29:36.98).

Additionally, Brower was tabbed the ODAC Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second-straight year and John Tucker was named the ODAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his 19 seasons.

The Washington and Lee women claimed the team title by a single point over second-place Roanoke. Sophomore Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) earned ODAC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year honors by winning the race with a time of 23:48.80. Junior Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) placed second with a time of 24:09.25, while junior Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield School) finished sixth with a time of 24:40.80. Freshmen Christine Ballistreri (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead) and Katherine Fenwick (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and sophomore Dorothy Todd (Watkinsville, Ga./Athens Academy) also garnered All-ODAC recognition for their finishes. Ballistreri placed 11th with a time of 25:27.24, Fenwick finished 13th with a time of 25:34.59 and Todd placed 14th (25:37.74).

Taylor was named the ODAC Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second-straight year and Kris Hoey was selected the ODAC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her five seasons.

Washington and Lee will continue action on November 10 as both the men and women participate in the NCAA Regional in Williamsburg, Va.
