W&L Cross Country Competes at Regionals; Women Take Third, Men Place Fourth

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee cross country teams competed at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional hosted by Christopher Newport University and held at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Va. The women placed third out of 28 teams, while the men placed fourth out of 21 teams.

The women had two individuals qualify for nationals in sophomore Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and junior Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood). Telfeyan came in ninth place out of 186 runners with a time of 23:32, narrowly edging out Taylor, who finished 10th in a time of 23:33.

Telfeyan and Taylor earned all-region honors for their performances, as did junior Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield School) and freshman Christine Ballistreri (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead). Webb finished 14th in a time of 24:03, while Ballistreri took 33rd in a time of 24:54.

The men were led by junior Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma), who placed fifth out of 170 runners in a time of 26:09, just seven seconds off the first-place finisher, and qualified for nationals. Junior Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Episcopal) finished 17th in a time of 26:43 and senior Tom Brower (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) crossed the tape in a time of 26:52 for 19th place.

Tefleyan, Taylor and Welsh will compete at the NCAA Championships on Saturday in Northfield, Minn., hosted by St. Olaf College. Both teams will find out on Sunday if they received an at-large bid.
