Men's Swimming

Washington and Lee has one of the finest men's swimming programs in Division III. The Generals have been a fixture in the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships over the years and finished eighth at the 2008 NCAA Championship event. Over the years, W&L swimmers have claimed five individual NCAA Championships and been named All-American a staggering 149 times since 1969. The Generals have had at least one All-America swimmer for each of the past 34 seasons and six swimmers garnered All-America recognition last season alone. The 2007-08 season was highlighted by Alex Sweet '08, who won the NCAA Championship in the 50 freestyle with a championship record time. Sweet also participated in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 50 free.

  • W&L Swimming Finishes Action at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships
    The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams finished up action at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday at the University of Minnesota. As a team, the men tied for 36th overall, while the women finished 48th overall.

    The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams had several individuals competing at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday at the University of Minnesota.
  • W&L Swimming Competes at NCAA Division III Championships
    The Washington and Lee men's swimming team had several individuals competing at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday at the University of Minnesota. First-year Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) earned Honorable Mention All-America honors with his finish in the 400 IM event. Washnock set a school record in the prelims (4:01.99) then bettered that record time en route to placing 13th overall in the finals with a time of 4:01.60.
  • W&L Swimming in Action at NCAA Division III National Championships
    The Washington and Lee men’s and women's swimming teams both had athletes in action on day one of the NCAA Division III National Championships at the University of Minnesota on Wednesday.

  • May 26, 2009: McKelvey, Doornbos Highlight Award Winners at W&L
    Seniors Terrence McKelvey (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) and Stacy Doornbos (Roswell, Ga./Lassiter) headed the list of honorees at the annual Washington and Lee University Athletic Awards Ceremony on May 26 at W&L’s Lee Chapel. McKelvey was named the Pres Brown Outstanding Senior Male Athlete, while Doornbos was the female recipient of the award.
  • April 29, 2009: Two W&L Student-Athletes Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships
    Washington and Lee senior swimmer Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) and senior cross country and track & field athlete Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield) have been awarded National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Postgraduate Scholarships. The awards are a $7,500 scholarship for academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.
  • April 17, 2009: W&L Announces 2009 Athletic Hall of Fame Class
    Washington and Lee University has announced the 22nd class to be inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame. The class includes Gibby McSpadden '56, Glenn Kirschner '84, Rebekah Prince '96 and Nathan Hottle '97. The group will be recognized at the Athletic Hall of Fame dinner on Fri., Sept. 11 and at the Generals' football game against Sewanee on Sat., Sept. 12.
  • April 16, 2009: Numerous W&L Students Earn Scholar-Athlete Awards
    Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 172 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.
  • April 1, 2009: W&L Men's Swimmers Honored by Bluegrass Mountain Conference
    The Washington and Lee men’s swimming team recently had a number of swimmers named to the All-Bluegrass Mountain Conference (BMC) team following its third-place finish at the conference meet.
  • March 20, 2009: W&L Participating In National Sportsmanship Day
    The Institute for International Sport is holding a National Sportsmanship Day and Washington and Lee will participate on Saturday. The Generals will celebrate the day with home events in men's and women's tennis, men's and women's lacrosse and baseball.
