Wrestling

W&L Wrestling has a long and storied history that dates back to the first varsity team in 1921-22. Over the years, W&L has gone on to produce 45 winning seasons and seven conference championships. Head Coach Gary Franke has been in charge of the program for each of the past 34 seasons and is the winningest coach in program history with 180 career victories. Franke guided the Generals to an 8-3 mark in 2006-07, the program's most wins in 20 years.

  • 4/28/2008:  W&L Wrestling Garners Academic Accolades
    The Centennial Conference recently announced its 2008 Academic Honor Roll and the Washington and Lee wrestling team had four wrestlers earn the award. Seniors Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) and David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook), and sophomore Sammy Brusca (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) were among the honorees.
  • 4/22/2008:  A Total Of 178 W&L Students Earn Scholar-Athlete Awards
    Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 178 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.
  • 3/12/2008:  W&L Wrestling Garners Academic Accolades
    The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) recently announced its 2008 Scholar All-America Teams and the Washington and Lee wrestling team was one of 25 Division III squads honored. Additionally, seniors Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's), Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers), Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) and David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) were honored as NWCA Scholar All-Americans.
  • 7/13/2007:  W&L Names Additional Athletic Department Assistants
    Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced the hiring of Michael Bennett, Garrett Brickner and Jocelyn Keller as assistant coaches within the department.
