Men's Soccer at Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Senior midfielder Jason Powell tallied the game-winner in the first half as the fourth-seeded Hampden-Sydney men’s soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over fifth-seeded Washington and Lee in the ODAC quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Miller Field.

H-SC quickly got on board when junior forward Will Robertson connected with Powell, who slipped a shot past W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) at the 1:30 mark and the Tigers held on for the shutout.

Sophomore John Robert Plyler played 90 between the pipes for H-SC and recorded three saves, while Bartlett also played the duration and stopped five would-be goals for the Generals.

With the win, the Tigers (12-5-1) advance to the ODAC semifinals, while the Generals end the season with a 9-6-2 overall record.

Men's Soccer vs. Randolph

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s soccer team netted two goals in the first half to post a 2-0 ODAC victory over Randolph on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals got on board in the 19th minute when senior midfielder Tommy Pignatelli (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) booted the ball into the upper right-hand corner of the net off of a feed from first-year midfielder Will Bouch (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud). Senior defender Fletcher McCraw (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) then made good on a penalty kick at 25:51 and W&L held on to the two-goal lead for the duration of the game.

With the win, the Generals improve to 9-5-2 overall and 4-5-1 in the ODAC, while the WildCats fall to 7-11 overall and 4-6 in league play.

Sophomore Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) and first-year Alex Lambert (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Chaminade) split time in goal and combined to make seven saves for the Blue and White, while sophomore Aaron Humphreys (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) played 90 minutes between the pipes and recorded six saves for Randolph.

The Generals will begin ODAC-tournament play on Saturday in the first-round. Game time, opponent and location is to be determined. Please check the W&L athletics website towards the end of the week for that information.

Men's Soccer vs. Virginia Wesleyan

LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior forward Brandon Massie (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) tallied a hat trick to lead Virginia Wesleyan to a 3-1 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC men’s soccer action on Saturday morning at Watt Field.

The Marlins (8-6-1, 7-6-1) got on board first when Massie found the back of the net off of an assist from first-year midfielder Kevin Maslyn (Centreville, Va./Centreville) at 25:41. Massie struck again in the 36th minute with an unassisted marker to give VWC a 2-0 lead at the half.

Senior midfielder John Lindsay (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) opened up the second half scoring when he blasted an unassisted shot past VWC first-year goalkeeper Ryan Zmuda (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) at 56:25 to slice the Marlins’ lead to 2-1. However, Massie slipped his third unassisted goal of the game past W&L sophomore netminder Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) at 66:12 and the Marlins held on for the two-goal triumph.

Zmuda played 90 minutes between the pipes and registered four saves for the Marlins, while Bartlett also played the duration and recorded eight saves for the Generals (8-5-2, 3-5-1).

W&L returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Randolph for a 4:00 pm game.

Men's Soccer at Hampden-Sydney

The Tigers (9-5-1, 4-3-1) got on board in the 17th minute of the contest when sophomore defender Matt Swaney made good on a penalty kick. Junior forward Will Robertson then added an insurance goal at the 56:31 mark off of an assist from first-year midfielder Bryan Wharton for the two-goal triumph.

Sophomore Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) played the duration between the pipes for W&L (8-4-2, 3-4-1) and stopped four would-be goals, while sophomore John Robert Plyler also played 90 minutes and recorded one save for the Tigers.

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s soccer team battled Marymount to a 0-0 double-overtime tie on Saturday afternoon at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Va.

Despite hard efforts by both teams, neither squad could find the back of the net in 110 minutes of play. The Generals held a slight 15-11 advantage in shots.

W&L (8-3-2) sophomore netminder Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) played the duration and stopped five would-be goals, while sophomore goalkeeper William Brahmstedt registered nine saves for MU (4-8-4).

The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Hampden-Sydney for a 4:00 pm game.

Men's Soccer vs. Ferrum

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior forward Whitt Larkin (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) notched one goal and dished out two assists as the Washington and Lee men’s soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over Ferrum on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (8-3-1) struck early in the first half when Larkin found senior midfielder John Lindsay (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield), who headed the ball past FC sophomore goalkeeper Chris Taylor (Roanoke, Va./Northside) at 23:07 to take a 1-0 lead at the break.

Lindsay opened the second-half scoring when he found the back of the net off of a feed from Larkin at the 64:56 mark. Larkin then netted an unassisted goal just 1:46 later en route to the three-goal victory.

W&L outshot Ferrum, 19-4, and held a 14-3 edge in corner kicks.

Sophomore netminder Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) and first-year Alex Lambert (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Chaminade) split time in goal for the Generals. Bartlett registered two saves, while Lambert did not face any shots. Taylor and sophomore Ben Pittsley (Woodbridge, Va./Douglas) also shared time between the pipes for the Panthers (2-12). Taylor notched three saves, while Pittsley did not make face any shots.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Three different Washington and Lee men's soccer players scored a goal in a 3-0 victory over ODAC-foe Guilford on Saturday afternoon at Haworth Fields.

The Generals (7-3-1, 3-3-1) got on board early when junior midfielder Drew Crowley (Weston, Mass./Weston) found the back of the net unassisted at 18:35 to take a 1-0 lead into the half. W&L then extended its advantage in the second half as senior midfielder John Lindsay (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) scored off of a senior forward Whitt Larkin (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) assist at 67:13. The Blue and White added another marker in the 77th minute when sophomore midfielder Ben Belair (McLean, Va./Langley) found Larkin, who slipped one past GC first-year goalkeeper Peter Truitt en route to the victory.

Sophomore Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) played 90 minutes and registered two saves, while Truitt also played the duration and stopped five would-be goals for the Quakers (3-8-1, 2-3-1).

After a scoreless first half, LC (8-2-2, 3-0-2) got on board when junior midfielder Josh Reed (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) connected with junior defender Pat Brown (Williamsburg, Va./Christchurch), who slipped one past W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) at the 56:54 mark. Brown then found sophomore forward Michael Abbonizio (Maple Glen, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham Sr), who added another marker at 68:39 to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore forward Donald Hart III (Springfield, Va./Paul IV) rounded out the scoring for the Hornets off of a sophomore midfielder Shawn Bender (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) assist in the 83rd minute.

LC junior goalkeeper Matt Sturdivant (Bear, Del./Caravel) played the duration and stopped one shot, while Bartlett also played 90 minutes and registered seven saves for the Generals (6-3-1, 2-3-1).

Pignatelli picked up his third point of the game when he found junior midfielder Drew Crowley (Weston, Mass./Weston), who slipped one past first-year goalkeeper Matty Rocawich (Chesterfield, Va./Trinity Episcopal) at 61:33 to take a 2-0 lead. W&L (6-2-1, 2-2-1) then found the back of the net two more times in the final 11 minutes of the contest off scores from junior defender Ted Grover (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) and senior forward Whitt Larkin (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) en route to the shutout.

EMORY, Va. – Senior midfielder Tommy Pignatelli (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) registered the game-winning goal and one assist late in the second half to help lead the Washington and Lee men’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory over ODAC-foe Emory & Henry on Wednesday afternoon in Emory, Va. 

The Wasps (4-5-1, 0-3) took an early 2-0 lead in the first 10:42 of the contest aided by goals from senior forward Elliott Anderson and senior defender Chris O’Conner to take a 2-0 lead at the half.

The Generals (5-2-1, 1-2-1) got on board when senior forward Whitt Larkin (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) found sophomore midfielder James Pymm (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony's), who blasted a shot past E&H goalkeeper Daniel Mills at 52:51 (2-1). Junior midfielder Strock Moore (Birmingham, Ala./Briarwood Christian) then registered the tying-goal off of an assist from Pignatelli at 85:38, before Pignatelli scored the game-winner off of a Pymm assist with just 2:59 remaining in the game to ensure the one-goal victory.

First-year Alex Lambert (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Chaminade) and sophomore Will Dorrance (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) split time between the pipes for W&L and combined to stop five would-be goals, while Mills played the entire duration and made 10 saves for E&H.

Men's Soccer at Roanoke

SALEM, Va. -- Senior defender Michael Walter tallied the game-winner in the second half to lead Roanoke to a 1-0 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Kerr Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, first-year defender Ben Freeman found Walter, who knocked the ball past W&L first-year goalkeeper Alex Lambert (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Chaminade) at 52:33 and RC held on for the one-goal win.

Sophomore Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) and Lambert split time between the pipes for W&L (4-2-1, 0-2-1). Bartlett had no saves, while Lambert stopped two would-be goals. Senior Adam Thompson played the entire 90:00 and did not make any saves for Roanoke (5-2-1, 2-0).

The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Emory & Henry for a 4:30 pm game.

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior midfielder Tommy Pignatelli (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) registered an assist in the first half and a goal in the second period to lead the Washington and Lee men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over cross-town, Division I rival Virginia Military Institute on Tuesday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The Generals (4-1-1), who have defeated the Keydets for the second-straight year, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of play when first-year midfielder Timothy Bouch (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) netted his first collegiate goal off of a Pignatelli assist.

W&L then extended its lead in the second half when Pignatelli scored off of a senior forward Whitt Larkin (Arlington, Va./Episcopal) assist at 47:47 en route to the two-goal victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) played the full 90:00 and stopped six would-be goals for the Generals, while sophomore Brian Sowell also played the entire contest and registered three saves for VMI (0-6).

HARRISONBURG, Va. – First-year midfielder Mitchell Leap netted the game-winner in the 61st minute to lead Eastern Mennonite to a 1-0 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC men’s soccer action on Saturday evening at the EMU Turf Field.

After a scoreless first half, EMU got on board as Leap sent one past W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) at 61:37 to give the Royals the one-goal triumph.

EMU (7-1, 1-1) held a 15-6 advantage in shots over W&L (3-1-1, 0-1-1).

Bartlett stopped eight shots for the Generals, while EMU senior goalkeeper Jackson Maust registered one save.

The Generals return to action on Tuesday as they travel to cross-town rival VMI for a 4:00 pm game.

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – First-year midfielder Chris Burgin (Atlantic Beach, Fla./Episcopal) notched the game-winning goal in the 68th minute to lead the Washington and Lee men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Maryville on Sunday afternoon in Maryville, Tenn.

W&L (3-0) got on board first when senior forward Whitt Larkin (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) connected on a free kick at 26:45. The Scots (4-1) responded 2:59 later when junior forward Zak Petersen found junior midfielder Mitchell Gray, who slipped the tying-goal past W&L sophomore netminder Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./Towson) to knot the score, 1-1. However, the Generals took the final lead when Burgin scored the game-winner unassisted at 68:23, and W&L held on to post the one-goal victory.

Bartlett played the entire contest for W&L and made five saves, while Maryville sophomore goalkeeper Bryan Walker also played the full 90:00 and stopped three shots.

The Generals return to action on Tuesday as they host Bridgewater for a 4:00 pm game.

Men's Soccer vs. Piedmont

LEXINGTON, Va.— First-year midfielder Stiles Harper (Columbia, S.C./Hammond School) netted the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to give the Washington and Lee men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over Piedmont on Sunday afternoon at Watt Field.

W&L (2-0) took an early lead when junior midfielder Drew Crowley (Weston, Mass./Weston) scored off of a sophomore midfielder James Pymm (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) assist at 13:45. PC (1-2) junior midfielder Jeremy Stille (Duluth, Ga./Northview) responded with the tying goal at 28:08 to send the two teams knotted, 1-1, entering the half.

The two teams were scoreless through the second half and the first overtime stanza, but Crowley connected with Harper, who found the back of the net with 6:27 left to play in the second overtime period to give the Blue and White the win. 

Sophomore netminder Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) played the entire contest for W&L and stopped nine shots, while first-year goalkeeper Brian Gaid (Marietta, Ga./Pope) also played the full 103:33 and registered 11 saves.

The Generals return to action on Sun., Sept. 14 when they travel to Maryville for a 1:00 pm game.

Men's Soccer vs. Shenandoah

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 2008 Washington and Lee men’s soccer team netted two goals in the second half to defeat Shenandoah, 2-0, in the home-opener on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (1-0) and the Hornets (1-4) remained tied 0-0 through the first half and some of the second, until W&L junior midfielder Drew Crowley (Weston, Mass./Weston) found the back of the net off of a junior forward Whit Larkin (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) corner kick at 63:11. First-year Huntley Johnson (Gainesville, Fla./St. Francis Catholic) then added an insurance goal with 48 seconds remaining in the game for the 2-0 final.

Sophomores Will Dorrance (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) and Ben Bartlett (Towson, Md./McDonogh) split time in goal, combining for the shutout for W&L. Dorrance registered one save, while Bartlett stopped two shots. Shenandoah goalkeeper Armon Bozorgmanesh (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) played the entire 90:00 and totaled four saves.

The Generals return to competition on Sunday when they host Piedmont for a 2:00 pm contest.
