
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. --- Selected members of the Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams competed at a last chance meet hosted by St. Mary's (Md.) in hopes of improving their NCAA qualifying times for the upcoming 2008 Division III Championships.
The Generals posted two provisional cuts on the day. Junior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) posted a "B" cut in the 200 back in a school-record time of 2:07.41, while the 800 free relay team of seniors Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) and Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro), and juniors Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) and junior Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Landsdale Catholic) improved their time to a "B" cut mark of 6:49.60.
The NCAA Division III Women's Championships will take place March 13-15, while the men's championships will be held March 20-22. Both meets will be hosted by Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
RADFORD, Va. – The Washington and Lee women’s swim program captured its 18th ODAC/Atlantic States Championship title on Sunday evening in Radford, Va., at the Dedmon Center. The Generals totaled 937 points with Randolph-Macon coming in second with 635 points.
W&L was led by junior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) and freshman Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill. / New Trier), who were both individual medalists. Strachan won the 200 back (2:08.90), while Hayden was the first finisher in the 1650 (18:21.26).
The Generals also won the 400 free relay in a time of 3:42.38. The winning team was made up of senior Amy Roberson (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches), freshman Rosie Purdy (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane), and sophomores Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) and Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School).
Additionally, Simpson placed second in the 100 free (55.70), while Worsham was third in the same event (56.42). Sophomore Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) notched second in the 200 breast (2:36.93) and Roberson took the bronze in the 200 free (2:17.54).
Washington and Lee finished the season with a 13-6 overall record and a perfect 7-0 mark in the ODAC.

The Generals won both relays and posted three first-place finishes on the day.
In the relays, the team of junior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School), sophomore Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School), senior Amy Roberson (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches) and freshman Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill. / New Trier) won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:52.42. Hayden and Worsham then joined up with sophomore Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg and freshman Jackie Smith (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) to win the 800 free relay in a time of 8:09.96.
Individually, Strachan posted a first-place finish in the 100 back (1:00.05), while Roberson took the gold in the 100 fly (1:00.04) and Hayden won the 200 free with a 1:59.42. Worsham finished first in the 100 breast (1:12:01). Additionally, junior Jessica Shaw (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) was the second to finish in the 400 IM (4:51.89).
W&L looks to claim its 18th ODAC title on Sunday in the final day of the championship meet.
RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's swimming team was in action on the first day of the 2008 ODAC/Atlantic States Swimming Championship on Friday in Radford, Va., at the Dedmon Center. After five events, W&L currently is in first place with 271 points.
The Generals were led by sophomore Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg), who competed on two winning relays and placed second in the 50 free (25.71).
Simpson teamed up with senior Amy Roberson (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches), freshman Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill. / New Trier) and sophomore Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) to win the 200 medley relay in a school record time of 1:41.58.
She and Roberson then joined juniors Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) and Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) to win the 400 medley relay in a time of 4:06.38, which was also good enough to set a new school record.
Additionally, Hayden also won the 500 free in a time of 5:18.61.
The Generals return to action on Saturday for the second day of the meet.

For the men, senior Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) posted two first-place finishes. Sweet finished first in the 50 free (20.79) and the 100 free (46.78), before teaming up with senior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro), junior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton) and sophomore Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee) to post another first-place finish with a time of 1:24.74 in the 200 free relay.
Junior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) also recorded a winning time for W&L. Crook placed first in the 500 free (4:50.60).
On the women’s side, juniors Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) and Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine’s) led the Generals with one first-place finish apiece. Senior Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) was the Generals’ top performer for the second-straight day as he totaled another NCAA “A” cut and swam on the “B” cut 400 free relay team. Sweet opened the day by breaking his own school record in the preliminaries of the 100 free with an “A” cut time of 45.15. In the finals, he placed second and broke his record again with a time of 45:04.
Senior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) also competed in the 100 free and recorded a “B” cut time of 46.54 in the preliminaries before taking seventh in the finals with a time of 45.95.
McGlaston and Sweet teamed up with junior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) and sophomore Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee) to place third in the 400 free relay with a provisional qualifying time of 3:03.93, which was the second fastest time in W&L school history.
Crook and Barnds also posted solid performances in individual events. Crook took seventh in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.58, while Barnds placed 17th in the 100 free (46.87).
The Generals return to action on Jan. 12 when they host Marymount at 1:00 pm.

Junior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) and senior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) also notched NCAA provisional qualifying times in individual events. Crook placed eighth in the 200 free (1:42.20), while McGlaston took fifth in the 50 free (20.90).
Additionally, the 200 free relay team of Sweet, McGlaston, junior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton) and sophomore Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee) took fourth in the 200 free relay with a “B” cut time of 1:23.30.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Washington and Lee swimming teams were in action on Saturday afternoon at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Dual meet. The W&L men finished 3-0 with wins over CMU (140-122), Franklin & Marshall (184-78) and Rochester (189-73). The W&L women went 2-1 on the day, defeating F&M (135-127) and Rochester (159.5-102.5) and falling to CMU (137-95).

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s swimming team posted a 161-96 victory over Centre, while the women were defeated by a score of 141-121 on Saturday morning at the Cy Tombly Pool.
On the men’s side, the Generals were led by senior Will Hartmann’s (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) three first-place finishes in the individual events. Hartmann touched first in the 100-yard backstroke (55.96), 200-yard backstroke (2:02.78) and 200-yard IM (2:03.41). Junior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) also notched two first-place finishes in individual events. Crook finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.42) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.91).
Hartmann and Crook were joined by five more W&L swimmers, who also had first-place finishes. Sophomore Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) was the first finisher in the 100-yard breastroke (1:02.96), while sophomore Josh Gonzalez (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.53). Senior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) won the 50-yard freestyle (21:26), while senior Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) posted a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (47.83). Sophomore Ian Childers (Ona, W. Va./Greater Latrobe) took gold in the 200-yard breastroke (2:17.62).
The men also swept the two relay events. The team of Stagg, Crook, Gonzalez and McGlaston placed first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1.38.68. Crook, sophomore Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee), McGlaston and Sweet finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:11.90).
On the women’s side, W&L was paced by junior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine’s) and junior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) with two first-place finishes apiece. Mahoney finished first in the 100-yard breastroke (1:13.54) and the 200-yard IM (2.19.68), while Stachan touched first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.77) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.84).
Additionally, freshman Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) took the gold in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:18.75 and junior Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.78).

On the men’s side, the Generals had six different swimmers finish first in the individual events. Sophomore Dan Austin (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont) touched first in the 1000 free (10:23.78), while sophomore Jonathan Giesen (Hoover, Ala./Paul Laurence Dunbar) was the first finisher in the 200 free (1:51.89). Junior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) notched first in the 200 IM (1:59.31), sophomore Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) was victorious in the 100 free (50.28) and senior Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) registered first in the 500 free (4:58.28). Sophomore Ian Childers (Ona, W. Va./Greater Latrobe) took gold in the 200 breast ( 2:19.52).
The men also swept the relay events. Junior Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake), and freshmen Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and Jackie Smith (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) led the women with two first-place finishes each. Miata touched first in the 50 free (25:45) and the 200 fly (2:19.68), while Hayden won the 1000 free (11:18.03) and the 200 back (2:21.30). Smith was the first finisher in the 200 free (2:00.37) and the 500 free (5:30.53).
Additionally, the team of sophomores Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) and Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School), senior Amy Roberson (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches) and junior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Maggie Walker Governor's School) won the 400 medley relay in a time of 4:15.62.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee swimming teams opened their 2007-08 seasons with a meet against Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon. Then men won by a score of 169-93, while the women were defeated by the Eagles, 169-93.
The men's win was highlighted by the performances of seniors Will Hartmann (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy), Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) and Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day). Hartmann took first place in the 100 back (54:87), the 200 back (2:01.86) and the 200 IM (2:02.55), while McGlaston on the 50 free in an NCAA "B" cut time of 20.82. Sweet won a pair of events, touching first in the 200 free (1:44.59) and the 100 free (47.01).
McGlaston also competed on the winning 200 free (1:26.13) and 200 medley (1:38.46) relays. On the 200 medley relay, he was joined by junior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell), and sophomores Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Maggie L. Walker Governor's School) and Josh Gonzalez (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan).
