Swimming at NCAA Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams finished up action at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday at the University of Minnesota.  As a team, the men tied for 36th overall, while the women finished 48th overall.

Two individuals earned Honorable Mention All-America honors, while the Generals 400 free relay team also grabbed Honorable Mention All-America laurels.

On the men's side, first-year Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) earned Honorable Mention All-American honors in the 200 back by touching in ninth place with a school record time of 1:49.25.  Washnock had placed 11th in the prelims with a time of 1:50.49.

The Generals' 400 free relay squad consisting of junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee), first-year Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery), junior Nick Talluri (Mt. Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) and senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) finished 15th overall with a time of 3:04.00 to earn Honorable Mention All-America accolades.  The relay finished 12th in the prelims with a time of 3:03.37.

Barnds also swam the 100 free in 46.33 to place 40th and missed the finals qualifying mark.

On the women's side, senior Lindsay Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) also earned Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 200 back, placing 11th overall with a time of 2:03.31.  She placed 15th in the prelims (2:04.78) earlier in the day.

Swimming at NCAA Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams had several individuals competing at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday at the University of Minnesota.

On the men's side, the Generals' 800 free relay squad consisting of senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell), junior Nick Talluri (Mt. Airy, N.C./Mount Airy), first-year Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee) missed qualifying for the finals after finishing in 17th place in the prelims with a time of 6:50.89.

First-year Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) placed 22nd and missed the finals qualifying mark in the 100 back with a time of 51.60.

For the women, senior Lindsay Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) finished tied for 33rd place and missed qualifying for the finals when she touched in 58.70 in the 100 back.

Action continues on Saturday with the 100 free, 200 back and 400 free relay events.

Swimming at NCAA Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Washington and Lee men's swimming team had several individuals competing at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday at the University of Minnesota.

First-year Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) earned Honorable Mention All-America honors with his finish in the 400 IM event.  Washnock set a school record in the prelims (4:01.99) then bettered that record time en route to placing 13th overall in the finals with a time of 4:01.60.

The Generals' 400 medley relay squad consisting of Washnock, senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell), first-year Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee) finished 17th in the prelims with a school-record time of 3:26.29. They are the first alternate for the finals and will be selected to compete should another relay team choose not to participate.

The 200 free relay team of Barnds, Brian Stirling, junior Nick Talluri (Mt. Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) and Crook also narrowly missed qualifying for the finals after placing 20th overall in the prelims with a time of 1:24.59.

In other preliminary events on Thursday, Brian Stirling finished 31st in the 100 fly with a time of 50.85, while Crook placed 44th in the 200 free with time of 1:43.03. Both will not compete in the finals.

Action continues on Friday with the 200 fly, 100 back, 100 breast and 800 free relay events.

Swimming at NCAA Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and swimming teams both had athletes in action on day one of the NCAA Division III National Championships at the University of Minnesota on Wednesday.

Senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School), W&L’s only women’s representative, recorded a time of 25.32 in preliminary round of the 50 free. She did not advance to the finals.

The men’s 200 medley relay team consisting of senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell), junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee) and first years Brian Stirling (Skilman, N.J./Montgomery) and Christopher Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) placed 18th in the preliminary round with a time of 1:34.05 that did not qualify them for the final round.

Crook placed 33rd in the prelims in the 500 free with a time of 4:36.22, while Barnds and junior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) finished 43rd and 50th in the 50 free with times of 21.16 and 21.28, respectively. All three missed the cut for the finals.

W&L returns to action on Thursday for day two. Prelims are slated to begin at 11:00 am.

Swimming at Kenyon Invitational

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams sent a handful of swimmers to the Kenyon College Invitational in one last attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The women’s team sent senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) and senior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine’s), while the men sent first-years Frank Cullo (Sewickley, Pa./Central Catholic) and Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery).

Strachan set a new school and ODAC-record in the 200 back with an NCAA “A” cut time of 2:02.67, while Mahoney posted “B” cut times in the 200 individual medley (2:10.71) and 200 breast (2:24.10). Both of Mahoney’s swims were also school and ODAC records.

Cullo broke the oldest standing school record on the men’s side with an NCAA “B” cut time of 16:07.31 in the 1650 free, while Stirling recorded a NCAA “B” cut time of 50.77 in the 100 fly. The previous record of 16:16.06 set by John Hudson in the 1650 free had stood since 1975.

Both the men’s and women’s swim teams will be in action as those swimmers that qualify will take part in the NCAA Championships held at the University of Minnesota. The NCAA meet is set to begin on March 18.

Swimming at ODAC Championships

RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s swimming team wrapped up its 19th Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday evening.

The Generals won the three-day meet with 1,010 points, while Randolph-Macon took second with 707 points.

Senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) led the way on the final day as she captured a pair of individual races, taking the 200 fly in 2:16.13 and the 200 back in a school-record time of 2:05.71.

In the 1650 free, it was sophomore Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) repeating as meet champion, claiming the event in 18:04.60.

Junior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) won the 100 free with a time of 54.57, while senior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine’s) captured the title in the 200 breast with a mark of 2:28.24.

First-year Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) was right behind Mahoney in the 200 breast as she finished second with a time of 2:29.32 and junior Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) completed a 1-2-3 sweep for W&L as she captured third in 2:30.64.

W&L also grabbed victory in the final event of the meet as the 400 free relay team won with a time of 3:39.62 to set another school record.

Strachan was named the ODAC Swimmer of the Year for the second-consecutive year, while head coach Kami Gardner was tabbed as the Coach of the Year and first-year Lauren Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Preparatory) was named as ODAC Rookie of the Year.

Washington and Lee returns to action at the NCAA Championships which are being held at the University of Minnesota. The NCAA meet is slated to begin on March 18.

Swimming at ODAC Championships

RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s swimming team continued its strong showing at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday evening.

After breaking three records and tying another on the opening day, W&L set three more school record and is leading the event with 666 points. Randolph-Macon sits in second with 467 points.

The 800 free relay team of junior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg), senior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines), sophomore Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and first-year Lauren Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Preparatory) set a new school and ODAC standard with a time of 8:00.00, besting the old school mark by over seven seconds.

Simpson was also part of the record-breaking 200 medley relay team as they set a new school and ODAC-record with a time of 1:49.13. Seniors Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) and Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) and junior Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) were also a part of the team.

Individual winners for W&L included senior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine’s) in the 400 individual medley as she notched a time of 4:45.04. Miata won the 100 fly in 1:00.46, Starnes took the 200 free in 1:57.63, Bazzel, set a new school-mark in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.41, and Strachan with a 58.13 in the 100 back.

The W&L women will wrap up competition at the ODAC Championship meet beginning Sunday morning.

Swimming at ODAC Championships

RADFORD, Va. - The Washington and Lee women's swimming team had a fine showing in the opening day of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships on Friday evening.

The Generals set three school records and tied another en route to leading the event after day one with 278 points. Randolph-Macon is in second place with 190 points and Sweet Briar is third with 115 points.

Junior Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) led the way for W&L by tying the school record in the 200 IM and swimming on the record-setting 200 free and 400 medley relay teams. Worsham won the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.60, tying the school record that was set in 1993. The 200 free relay team completed in 1:38.17, setting a W&L, ODAC and meet record, while the 400 medley relay team also set a W&L, ODAC and meet record (4:00.28).

Senior Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake), first-year Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) and junior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenberg) joined Worsham on the 200 free relay team.

Senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) led off the 400 medley relay team with a school and ODAC record in the 100 back (58.08). She was followed in the event by Fredericks, Miata and Worsham.

First-year Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep) won the 500 free (5:13.10), while sophomore Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) finished second in the same event with a time of 5:14.71.

Fredericks and senior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine's) finished second (2:12.81) and third (2:13.01), respectively in the 200 IM, while Miata finished second (24.82) and Simpson (25.00) finished third in the 50 free.

Second day action continues on Saturday morning.

Swimming at Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Both the Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams were defeated in a dual meet against Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon in Baltimore, Md. The 13th-ranked W&L men fell to the fifth-ranked Blue Jays, 143-119, while the women were defeated by the sixth-ranked JHU squad, 156-97.

Senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) had a stellar meet for the W&L men (11-2), winning three individual events on the day. He touched first in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.26, won the 500 free with a time of 4:50.02 and also emerged with a win in the 200 IM (1:59.60).

Additionally, junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee) won the 50 free (22.16) and led off the winning 200 free relay team that finished in 1:26.82. He was joined on the team by first-year Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery), senior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton) and junior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy).

For the W&L women (9-6), first-year Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) led the way with a first-place finish in the 100 fly (1:03.38), while also competing on the winning 200 free relay squad that finished in 1:43.96. Senior Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) led off the relay and was joined by Fredericks and juniors Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) and Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg).

Senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) won the 100 back (1:01.55), while first-year Katie Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) touched first in the 400 IM (4:56.59).

The Washington and Lee men will return to action on Feb. 11-14 as they compete in the Bluegrass Mountain Championships held in Charlotte, N.C. The women return to the pool on Feb. 13-15 at the ODAC Championships held at Radford University.

Swimming at Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams traveled to Marymount on Saturday afternoon and both teams came away with victories. The men prevailed 136-99, while the women came out on top, 151-110.

The women (9-5) were led once again by senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) who tallied two individual wins and was a part of W&L’s win winning 200 medley relay. Strachan won the 200 butterfly in 2:18.97 and touched first in the 200 back with a time of 2:10.12. She was joined on the medley relay team by senior Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) and juniors Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) and Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) as they recorded a time of 1:53.71.

First-years Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) and Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Preparatory School) also recorded a pair of first-place finishes as Fredericks took the 50 free in 25.69 and the 200 individual medley in 2:15.75, while Starnes notched wins in the 1000 free (11:10.16) and the 500 free (5:24.19). Other first-place finishers for the Generals included Bazzel in the 100 breast (1:10.19), Miata in the 100 fly (1:02.90) and sophomore Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) in the 200 free (2:01.94).

On the men’s side, the Generals (11-1) were led by senior Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Lansdale Catholic) and junior Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) as they both notched a pair of first-place finishes. Diebold took the 100 and 200 backstroke events in 55.85 and 2:03.06, respectively, while Stagg won the 100 breast (1:02.53) and the 100 fly (53.85).

Also placing first were first-year Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery), who won the 200 free (1:50.00), sophomore Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy), who touched first in the 200 butterfly (2:02.91) and juniors Ian Childers (Ona, W. Va./Greater Latrobe) and Jonathan Giesen (Hoover, Ala./Laurence Dunbar). Childers took the 200 breast in 2:16.44, while Giesen took the 500 free in 5:01.27. The Generals also posted a win in the 200 medley relay as Childers, Giesen, Stirling and senior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton) combined to record a time of 1:42.45.

Both the men and women return to action when they travel to Johns Hopkins on Saturday for an 11:00 am meet.

Swimming vs. Gettysburg

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee swimming teams were both in action on Saturday as the Generals hosted Gettysburg College for a dual meet. The W&L men won, 159-100, while the women were victorious for the first-time ever against the Bullets, 135-127.

The women were again led by the exploits of senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School), who won two individual events and swam on a winning relay team. Strachan won the 200 back with a time of 2:09.53 that broke a 26-year old pool record. She also won the 100 back (1:01.53) and led off the winning 200 medley relay squad that finished in 1:53.78. She was joined on the team by junior Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett), senior Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) and junior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg).

Other first-place finishers for the Generals included Bazzel, Miata and first-year Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York). Bazzel touched first in the 100 breast (1:09.75), Miata won the 50 free (25.83) and Fredericks finished first in the 200 breast (2:30.62).

For the men, senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) led the way with a pair of first-place individual showings and a pair of first-place finishes on relay teams. He won the 100 free (48.18) and 200 IM (2:01.98) and also swam on the winning 200 medley (1:40.31) and 200 free (1:31.92) relay teams. He was joined on both relay squads by seniors Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./Walton), Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Landsdale Catholic) senior Matt Anderson (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's).

Additionally, juniors Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C. / Mount Airy), Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va. / Governor's School), Ian Childers (Ona, W. Va. / Greater Latrobe) and Dan Austin (Terrace Park, Ohio / Mariemont), sophomore Dorsey Terry (Gibbstown, N.J. / Salesianum) and first-years Ben Absher (Knoxville, Tenn./Christian Academy) and Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J. / Montgomery) all won a event for the Generals. Talluri placed first in the 200 free (1:48.47), Stagg touched first in the 200 fly (2:01.62), Childers won the 200 breast (2:16.53), Austin finished first in the 500 free (5:01.42), Terry won the 100 fly (55.39), Absher placed first in the 1000 free (10:28.32) and Stirling touched first in the 50 free (22.29).

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Marymount for a 2:00 pm dual meet.

Swimming vs. Wingate

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams were in action on Saturday afternoon in a tri-match held at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. Both the men and women defeated Catawba and Ashland and both fell to Wingate. Team scores were unavailable.

The W&L men (9-1) were led by senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell), who won the 200 free with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:42.59, won the 500 free (4:47.27), finished third in the 200 IM (1:56.91) and swam a leg on the third-place 200 medley relay team that finished in 1:38.24. He was joined on the relay team by senior Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Lansdale Catholic), first-year Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee).

Swimming at Finis Collegiate Invitational

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Washington and Lee swimming teams wrapped up competition on Monday evening at the Finis Collegiate Invite. The Generals won the men’s team title, while the women finished second overall.

The men totaled 1919.0 points to better UC Santa Cruz, who placed second with 1633.5 points.  On the women's side, Santa Cruz took the team title with 1682.0 points, while W&L totaled 1210.0 points to finish second.

Senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) spearheaded the men’s team effort by winning the 200 IM with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:54.53 and swimming the 500 free in an NCAA “B” cut time of 4:36.24. He also swam the anchor leg on both the winning 200 free relay (1:25.31) and 400 medley relay (3:34.40) teams.

Crook was joined on the 200 free relay team by senior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./Walton), junior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C. / Mount Airy) and junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee), while Tatman and first-years Robert Grattan (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) and Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) teamed with Crook on the 400 medley relay squad.

Also for the men, Talluri won the 50 free with a time of 21.55 and first-year Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton), junior Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) and Barnds all produced runner-up finishes. Hartman finished second in the 500 free (4:45.02), Stagg was second in the 200 IM (1:59.34) and Barnds finished second behind Talluri in the 50 free with a time of 21.64.

For the W&L women, senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) continued to have an impressive showing on Monday, notching a school-record, ODAC-record and NCAA “B” cut time in a 200 back time trial (2:06.66). She also led off the 400 medley relay team that touched the wall first with a school-record time of 4:03.27. Junior Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett), senior Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) and junior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) joined Strachan on the winning relay team.

Miata also took first place in the 50 free with a time of 25.06, while first-year Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep) and senior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) also took home first place honors. Starnes won the 500 free (5:21.42) and Mahoney won the 200 IM (2:14.32).

Also for the women, sophomore Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) finished as the runner-up in the 500 free (5:22.99), junior Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) placed second in the 200 IM (2:16.85) and Simpson placed second in the 50 free (25.60).

The Generals will now break for the holidays before returning to action on Jan. 10 against Wingate, Catawba and Ashland at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center near Charlotte, N.C.

Swimming at Finis Collegiate Invitational

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The Washington and Lee swimming teams were in action again on Sunday evening at the Finis Collegiate Invitational. With one day of competition remaining, the W&L men reside in third place out of 10 teams, while the women are fourth out of 11 teams.

On the men's side, UC Santa Cruz leads the way with 1433.5 points, followed by Fresno Pacific with 1261.5 points and Washington and Lee (1169.0). The Banana Slugs also lead the women's competition with 1590.0 points. Fresno Pacific is second with 839.5 points, followed by Cal State-Bakersfield (839.0) and W&L (674).

The W&L men were paced by senior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./Walton), who finished third in the 200 back with an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:54.11 and first-year Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton), who placed second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.21.

The 400 free relay team of junior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy), senior Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Landsdale Catholic), junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee) and senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) placed third overall (3:11.16), while first-years Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) and Robert Grattan (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) both finished fourth in their respective events. Washnock completed the 200 back in 1:55.64 and Grattan finished the 200 breast in 2:13.97.

The Generals' 400 free relay team comprised of first-year Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York), junior Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School), first-year Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and junior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) also tallied a school record, finishing in third place with a time of 3:41.43.

Other top finishers for the women were sophomore Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), who placed sixth in the 1650 free (18:32.57) and first-year Brielle Weinstein (Summerville, S.C./Pinewood Prep), who placed sixth in the 200 back (2:16.09).

Washington and Lee will complete action in the Finis Intercollegiate with the final day of competition on Monday evening.

Swimming at Finis Collegiate Invitational

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams were in action on Saturday evening at the Finis Collegiate Invitational.

After participating in just one of the two days contested thus far, the W&L men are fourth out of nine teams, while the women are sixth out of 11 squads.

Leading the way for the men was senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell), who finished third in the 200 free with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:40.36 and swam a leg of the 200 medley relay that finished second overall (1:37.09) and participated on the 800 free relay team that placed third overall (6:53.95). He was joined on the 200 relay team by junior Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School), first-year Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee), while his teammates on the 800 relay team were senior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./Walton), senior Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Landsdale Catholic) and first-year Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton).

First-year Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) finished as the runner-up in the 100 fly with a time of 52.10, while classmate Robert Grattan (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) placed second in the 100 breast (1:00.51).

For the W&L women, senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) led the way with a second place finish in the 100 back with an NCAA “B” cut and school-record time of 59.20.

The 800 free relay team of first-year Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep), senior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines), first-year Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and junior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) also set a school record (8:05.73) in finishing fourth overall.

Other individual leaders for the women were Mahoney, who placed third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:45.85 and Starnes, who placed fifth in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.11. Senior Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) also finished eighth in the 100 fly with a time of 1:01.81.

Swimming at Franklin & Marshall

Swimming at Sweet Briar

SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- The W&L women’s swimming team, competing for the second day in a row, defeated ODAC-foe Sweet Briar, 151-101, on Saturday afternoon at Prothro Natatorium.

The Generals improved to 3-3 on the season and 2-0 in the ODAC, while SBC fell to 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in the ODAC.

Washington and Lee received wins from both the 400 medley relay team and the 400 free relay in addition to taking the top-three places in both the 800 free and the 100 back on its way to victory.

Seniors Lindsay Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) and Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake), junior Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Welseyan) and first-year Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) combined to win the 400 medley relay in a time of 4:43.67.

In the 400 free relay it was Strachan, Fredericks, junior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) and first-year Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Country Day) winning in 4:15.88.

Cassada, Simpson, and junior Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) went 1-2-3 in the 800 free with times of 10:02.41, 10:12.48 and 10:12.53, respectively. In the 100 back it was sophomore Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), senior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine’s) and first-year Joan Hudak (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet) finishing 1-2-3 in 1:13.89, 1:17.69 and 1:18.54, respectively.

The W&L women are off until November 22, when they take on Franklin & Marshall, Carnegie Mellon and Rochester at F&M. The meet is set to begin at 11:00 am.

Swimming vs. Randolph-Macon

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women’s swimming team defeated Randolph-Macon, 156-102, in a dual meet held at Cy Twombly Pool on Friday evening.

First-year Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) led the W&L women as she tallied three first-place finishes. Senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School), junior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) and first-year Lauren Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep) won two events each.

Fredericks took the 100 breast (1:10.20), the 200 breast (2:31.62) and the 200 IM (2:17.57). Strachan was victorious in the 100 and 200 back with times of 1:01.71 and 2:11.84, respectively.

Simpson and Starnes combined to win four of the five freestyle events as Starnes took the 200 (2:00.10) and 500 (5:21.48) and Simpson captured the 50 (26.10) and 100 (56.59).

Sophomore Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) completed W&L’s sweep of the freestyle events as she captured the 1000 free in 11:06.91.

W&L returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Sweet Briar for a 1:00 pm meet.

Swimming vs. Centre

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The W&L men’s and women’s swim teams were in action on Saturday afternoon, taking on Centre and DePauw in a meet held on the campus of the University of Louisville. The men came away with a pair of victories, while the women came up just short.

The men’s team posted a 192-92 win over Centre and defeated DePauw 155-139 to improve to 4-0 early in the season. The W&L women fell 155-116 to Centre and 166-112 to DePauw.

But, it was first-year Kate Gibbs (Midothian, Va./Clover Hill) who provided the real highlight for the women’s team. Gibbs set a new Adapted American Swimming Record in the S9 classification of the 200 fly for a single-arm amputee as she notched a time of 2:31.29.

The women’s swim team returns to the pool on Friday when it hosts Randolph-Macon in an ODAC meet, while the men are off until the Emory Invitational on November 15.

Swimming at Transylvania

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The W&L men’s and women’s swim teams took part in a dual meet with Transylvania on Friday evening and both teams came away with victories. The men improved to 2-0 with a 127-76 win, while the women evened their ledger at 1-1 with a 116-89 triumph.

First-year Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) was a double-winner for the women as she took the 100 breast in a school-record time of 1:08.96 and the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.47.

Also winning for the Generals were seniors Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) in the 100 back (1:03.26) and Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) in the 100 fly (1:02.81). Sophomore Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) was a winner in the 500 free, touching in 5:26.38, while classmate Lauren Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Preparatory) won the 1000 free in 11:07.99.

The W&L women also received one relay win as the 200 medley team of Strachan, Fredericks, Miata and junior Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) recorded a 1:55.32 on its way to victory.

 On the men’s side, junior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) recorded an individual win and was a part of two winning relays to lead the Generals to their second win in as many chances.

Talluri won the 100 free in 49.73 and teamed with first-years Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and Bradley Harder (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) and junior Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) to take the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.40. The 200 free relay won with a time of 1:30.05 and consisted of Talluri, Stirling, senior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton) and junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee South).

Barnds was an individual winner in the 50 free (22.68), and was clocked at 1:03.12 in taking the 100 breast. Senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) recorded a time of 10:28.93 in winning the 1000 free. First-year Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) won the 200 free with a time of 1:48.58 and sophomore Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) rounded out the winners for W&L with a victory in the 100 fly (55.19).

Both the men’s and women’s teams are in action on Saturday in a tri-meet with DePauw and Centre. The meet, which is being held at the University of Louisville, is set to begin at 1:00 pm.

Swimming vs. ODAC Fall Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The W&L Women’s swimming team took first in all 10 events as the Generals posted a team score of 662 to take the ODAC Fall Relays on Saturday.

Randolph-Macon was the Generals’ nearest competitor, totaling 506 points. Sweet Briar (444), Bridgewater (424) and Emory & Henry (238) rounded out the Top 5.

Senior Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) and junior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) led the Generals to the team win as each participated on five winning relay teams. Senior Lindsey Strachan (Richmond, Va./Governor’s School) and junior Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) each had a hand on four winning teams.

Wins for W&L included; Simpson and Miata teaming with first-year Kate Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J./Mt. St. Mary) to win the 150 yard butterfly relay in a time of 1:25.14. Simpson and Miata, as well as Worsham and first-year Lauren Starnes comprised the 400 free relay that won in 3:47.83. Simpson, Worsham and Starnes were then joined by sophomore Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) to win the 500 free relay with a time of 5:02.49.

Strachan also had a hand in the 150 backstroke relay along with first-years Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Country Day) and Brielle Weinstein (Summerville, S.C./Pinewood Prep), as they clocked a 1:28.47 in victory.

Miata, Simpson and Strachan swam with junior Lynn Bazzell (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) to take first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:56.90.

Both the men’s and women’s teams are in action on Friday when they travel to Transylvania for a 7:30 pm meet.

Swimming vs. Mary Washington

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams split with visiting Mary Washington to open the 2008-09 season. The W&L men came away 170-92 winners, while the women fell 152-110.

10 event victories (eight individual, two relays) highlighted what was a solid opening meet for the W&L men’s swim team.

Junior Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) won both the 100 breast (1:02.79) and the 200 breast (2:18.65) as well as taking part in the 200 medley relay that won with a time of 1:38.53 to lead the Generals. Joining Stagg on the medley relay team were first-year Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery), junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee) and senior Paul Crook (Nashville Tenn./Montgomery Bell). The team of Crook, Stirling, senior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton) and first-year Bradley Harder (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) captured the 400 free relay in a time of 3:18.67.

Other individual winners for the men included junior Dan Austin (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemount) in the 1000 free (10:19.51), Crook in the 200 free (1:44.15) and the 500 free (4:47.99), Harder in the 100 back (55.52), first-year Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) in the 200 butterfly (2:00.66), first-year Christopher Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) taking the 200 back in 1:59.61.

On the women’s side, first-year Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) was a two-time winner in her college debut. Fredericks took the 100 breast in 1:10.41 and followed that up with a win in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:18.25.

Senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor’s School) was also an individual winner for the women, taking the 200 back in 2:13.80.

The women are in action next Saturday when they host the ODAC Fall Invitational, while the men return to the pool on October 31, when they travel to Transylvania.
