With nearly eighty percent of students choosing to be involved in Greek Life, there are abundant opportunities for leadership and involvement. There are 15 active national fraternities and 7 active national sororities. Two fraternities and two sororities are historically black.
Greek life at Washington and Lee is very popular, and benefits Greek and non-Greek students alike. Important distinctions of W&L's Greek system are the levels of inclusion and diversity- both socioeconomic and ethnic- within each individual house, and across the system as a whole. Greek membership is not limiting. You might choose a different fraternity from the one your best friend joins - or you might not join one at all and still have friends that are Greek and non-Greek. You can be in a sorority and still have time for any number of activities. With more than 130 clubs and organizations on campus there is a lot more going on than hanging out in Greek houses (which, by the way, are all owned by the University).
The Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils oversee Rush (the formal recruitment process during which students decide whick Greek house they will join). Formal rush will begin approximately one week after the students return from their winter break and lasts for five days. After the formal rush period, men and women begin a six-week new member education period.
