25% of Washington and Lee student-athletes have proven their prowess in the classroom and on the athletic fields. With 23 varsity sports there is a sport to suit every General. W&L is a founding member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference which pits our finest against schools from Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. But instead of signing autographs, our athletes sign the pledge. Instead of shoe contracts W&L students nab signing bonuses from top investment banking firms.
We’re a NCAA Division III athletic program which means we cannot offer scholarships in exchange for playing time. But we can offer you the opportunity of a lifetime- a college sports career and a winning education.

Don’t worry Tiger. Just because you haven’t heard from the golf coach doesn’t mean that we don’t want you on our team. NCAA rules govern coaches’ contact with players so take matters into your own hands and fill out an interest form on the Department of Athletics' website. You’ll be hitting the links (or the lacrosse field) in no time.
Where is the fine print? Before I sign on the dotted line, I want to make sure that athletics won’t dominate my life. After all, I want everything W&L has to offer- academics, athletics and extracurriculars. Plus time to grab a burger in the Co-op and catch some shut eye.
At W&L we are student-athletes. Our academic commitments always come first. Last year 194 athletes earned the Student-Athlete Award for achieving a 3.5 GPA in a semester. No matter how big the game, acing your economics exam is top priority. Should you miss class for athletic travel, you are responsible for making up any work missed. The Honor System allows athletes the freedom to take tests early. It is no wonder professors are some of our biggest fans.
Maybe you haven’t picked up a racket in 10 years. Maybe the last time you dusted off your sneakers Ace of Base was touring. Or maybe you just want to feel like a kid again. Join one of our club or intramural teams!

Looking for a walk on the wild side? Our Outing Club is one of the biggest and most popular clubs on campus. The Outing Club offers excursions of every variety- from getting SCUBA certified for a PE credit to skiing, hiking and biking. The Outing Club also offers trips every year. Previous adventures have included camping in Jamaica and getting “Shipwrecked in Belize.”
It’s that time of year. The holiday season has taken its toll on your 6-pack abs. You have booked your flight to Los Cabos for spring break. And you need to let off some steam before you can hit the library. Forget the expensive membership- take advantage of W&L’s own state of the art fitness center. Re-opened in 2002, the $4 million fitness center boasts six televisions, 10 treadmills, 8 elliptical machines, free-weights and lifting machines. You’ll get to pump iron next to varsity athletes and rub elbows with your politics professor.
Upstairs in the gym Generals play hoops in two gyms, log mileage on the indoor track, sweat on the racquetball courts, practice their pirouettes in the dance studio and splash in the six-lane swimming pool. Weekly fitness classes are sponsored by Campus Recreation.
