W&L Women's Cross Country Wins Virginia Wesleyan Invitational

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- The Washington and Lee women's cross country team opened the 2008-09 year in athletics with a near perfect race at the 6K Virginia Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday morning.  The Generals finished first out of 12 teams and took five of the top six individual placings in producing a near perfect point total of 18 points.

Senior Jessica Shaw (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) won the race by crossing the finish line in 22:17.  Senior Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield School) placed second with a time of 22:37, while junior Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) finished fourth with a time of 22:56.  Senior Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) finished fifth (23:44) and junior Dorothy Todd (Watkinsville, Ga./Athens Academy) finished sixth with a time of 23:54.  Sophomores Christine Balistreri (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead) and Katherine Fenwick (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) wrapped up the W&L contingent by finishing 17th and 21st, respectively.  Balistreri completed the course in 25:12 and Fenwick crossed the line in 25:16.

Both the W&L women's and men's cross country teams will be in action on Saturday as they host the W&L Invitational starting at 10:00 am.
