
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swim teams both posted wins over Transylvania in their first home meet of the 2007-08 season on Saturday afternoon at Cy Twombly Pool. The men won by a score of 116-82, while the women downed the Pioneers, 108-82.
On the men’s side, the Generals had six different swimmers finish first in the individual events. Sophomore Dan Austin (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont) touched first in the 1000 free (10:23.78), while sophomore Jonathan Giesen (Hoover, Ala./Paul Laurence Dunbar) was the first finisher in the 200 free (1:51.89). Junior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) notched first in the 200 IM (1:59.31), sophomore Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) was victorious in the 100 free (50.28) and senior Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) registered first in the 500 free (4:58.28). Sophomore Ian Childers (Ona, W. Va./Greater Latrobe) took gold in the 200 breast ( 2:19.52).
The men also swept the relay events. The team of Childers, and seniors Evan Fitzgerald (Southern Pines, N.C./Oneal School), Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) and Adam Schapiro (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) won the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:46.48. McGlaston, Fitzgerald, Sweet and senior Will Hartmann (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) teamed up to win the 400 free relay (3:16.22).
Junior Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake), and freshmen Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and Jackie Smith (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) led the women with two first-place finishes each. Miata touched first in the 50 free (25:45) and the 200 fly (2:19.68), while Hayden won the 1000 free (11:18.03) and the 200 back (2:21.30). Smith was the first finisher in the 200 free (2:00.37) and the 500 free (5:30.53).
Additionally, the team of sophomores Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) and Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School), senior Amy Roberson (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches) and junior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Maggie Walker Governor's School) won the 400 medley relay in a time of 4:15.62.
The men and women return to action on Saturday when they host Centre at 10:00 am.
