W&L Swimming Competes in First Day of Nike Invitational



GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams were in action in the first day of the Nike Invitational hosted by Kenyon College on Thursday night.

Highlighting the evening was the performance of the 'A' men's 800 free relay team that placed fifth out of 25 teams in an NCAA "B" cut time of 6:51.56. Juniors Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell), Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Landsdale Catholic) and Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton), and senior Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) made up the fifth-place team.

Additionally, senior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) was a member of the 'B' 800 free relay and swam a 'B' cut time of 1:42.77 in his 200 free split.

On the women's side, the quartet of freshmen Jaclyn Smith (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), and junior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) and sophomore Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) set a school record in the 800 free relay(8:07.49).

The Generals return to action for the second day of the Nike Invitational on Friday at 10 am.
