W&L Swimming Takes on Marymount and Wingate

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams competed against Marymount and Wingate on Saturday afternoon. The men swept both teams, edging out Wingate, 133-129, and defeating Marymount, 222-37. The women lost to Wingate, 160-101, but topped Marymount, 184.5-70.50.

For the women, junior Lindsay Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) led the Generals with two first-place finishes. Strachan took gold in the 100 back with a time of 1:02.03 and finished first in the 200 back in a time of 2:12.63.

Freshmen Jackie Smith (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) also tallied first-place finishes. Smith was the top performer in the 200 free (2:01.33), while Hayden was the winner of the 500 free (5:24.49).

On the men's side, senior Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) posted two winning performances and competed on the first-place finishing 400 free relay. Sweet took first in both the 50 free (20.80 - "B" cut) and the 100 free (46.75).

Sweet then teamed up with senior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro), junior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton) and sophomore Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee) to post a time of 3:09.79 in the 400 free relay.

Senior Will Hartmann (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) and sophomore Josh Gonzalez (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) also recorded winning times for W&L. Hartmann placed first in the 100 back (54.80), while Gonzalez was first in the 100 butterfly (53.26).

The women return to action on Friday when they take on 2007 ODAC Champion Randolph-Macon. The men do not compete again until a dual meet with Johns Hopkins on Jan. 25-26.
