W&L Men's Swimming Currently In Second After Day Two of Conference Meet

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- The Washington and Lee men’s swimming team was in action in the second day of the 2008 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships on Thursday in Charlotte, N.C., at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club. The Generals are currently in second place through six events, trailing current leader Wingate, 237-227.

The team of seniors Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) and Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro), junior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton) and sophomore Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee) placed second in the 200 free relay with an NCAA "A" cut time of 1:22.41.

McGlaston also competed in the fourth-place finishing 400 medley relay (3:32.55), along with junior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell), sophomore Josh Gonzalez (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and senior Will Hartmann (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy).

Individually, Sweet and McGlaston each logged an NCAA "A" cut time in the 50 free. Sweet placed fourth in the finals (20.53) and also set a new school record in the prelims of the event with a time of 20.43. McGlaston finished fifth with a time of 20.60.

Additionally, W&L had four swimmers rack up points in the 500 free as Crook placed first with an NCAA "B" cut time of 4:36.58, sophomore Jonathan Giesen (Hoover, Ala./Paul Laurence Dunbar) took second (4:43.49), junior Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Landsdale Catholic) was the fifth finisher (4:47.96) and sophomore Dan Austin (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont) was seventh (4:49.68).

W&L returns to action on Friday for the third day of the conference meet at 10:30 am.
