W&L Track & Field Competes At Liberty Kick Off



LYNCHBURG, Va.--The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams opened their 2007-08 season by competing in the Liberty Kick Off on Saturday morning. The Generals had nine top-five finishes among Division III athletes and set one school record.

On the men’s side, W&L was led by sophomore Billy Billington (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy), who finished first among Division III competitors with a lifetime-best in the shot put (46’10.75”) and second in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 49’ 5.75’’. Sophomore Ryan Castle (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) finished third among Division III competitors in the high jump (6’0.5’’) and fifth in the long jump (19’10.75”).

Additionally, senior Marshall French (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine’s) finished seventh among Division III schools in the 400 meters with a time of 53.80, while junior Sean Hurdiss (Missouri City, Texas/Elkins) crossed the line at 7.45 seconds for a seventh-place finish in the 60-meter dash.

For the women, the Blue and White were paced by freshman Summer Lollie (Mesquite, Texas./Dr. John D Horn), who set a school record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.29 seconds. Additionally, Lollie placed fourth in the 200 meters (27.99) and then leaped 9.54 meters for a fourth-place finish in the triple jump. Junior Tara Hildenbrand (Castroville, Texas/Medina Valley) placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 65.40.

Also for W&L, junior Stephanie Stelter (Magnolia, Texas/Concordia Lutheran) ran the 400 hurdles in 65.76 seconds and placed fourth. Stelter also placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles at 10.49.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Sat., Jan. 19 when it competes in the Marietta Invitational at 11:00 am.
