
The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s indoor track & field teams competed in the Liberty On Track Open on Friday and Saturday. The Generals had four first-place finishes and 19 Top.10 finishes among Division III athletes and set three school records.
On the men’s side, W&L was led by junior Vance Berry (Porte Verda, Fla./Episcopal), who finished first among Division III competitors in the 5000 meters (15:45). Junior Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) placed second in the 5000 meters, when he crossed the tape in 15:51.34.
Additionally, sophomore Billy Billington (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy), notched a second-place finish in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 49’09”, while senior Michael Keenan (Chicago, Ill./Northside College Prep) set a school record in the heptathlon with 2,675 total points.
For the women, the Blue and White were paced by junior Elizabeth Webb (Middlebury, Va./Wakefield), who set a school record and an ODAC record when she placed first in the mile (5:07.36). Junior Stacy Doornbos (Roswell,Ga./Lassiter) also set a school record in the pentathlon with 3,096 total points to finish third overall.
Also for the women, freshman Summer Lollie (Mesquite, Texas./Dr. John D Horn) placed first among Division III competitors in the 200 meters (27.59) and then leaped 9.87 meters for a second-place finish in the triple jump. Freshman Katherine Fenwick (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) also notched a first-place finish in the 800 meters (2:32.54).
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it competes at the VMI Relays at 8:30 am.
