W&L Outdoor Track and Field Starts Off Season at Emory Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga.—The Washington and Lee outdoor track and field teams opened up their season at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. on Saturday. The Generals notched 13 Top. 10 finishes and set three school records.

The women were led by the 4x100 meter relay team of freshman Summer Lollie (Mesquite, Texas/Dr. John D Horn) and juniors Stephanie Stelter (Magnolia, Texas/Concordia Lutheran), Tara Hildenbrand (Castroville, Texas/Medina Valley) and Stacy Doornbos (Roswell, Ga./Lassiter), who finished fifth to set a school record (50.79). Doornbos and junior Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield) also set school records. Doornbos notched a second-place finish in the 400 meters running 58.48, while Webb finished third overall in the 800 meters (2:17.73). Also, junior Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) crossed the tape in 4:53.36 in the 1500 meters for a third-place finish.

Additionally, sophomore Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John’s) completed the 400 meter hurdles in 70.12, while junior Alysen Kuck (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) had top marks in the javelin with a personal best 112ft. 8in. Sophomore Maggie Sutherland (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) finished fifth in the 100 meter hurdles running 16.66.

On the men’s side, junior Vance Berry (Porte Vedra, Fla./Episcopal) finished third in the 5000 meters running 15:35.84. Sophomore Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman) jumped a personal best in the high jump when he leaped 6 ft. 3.25in. Also, sophomore Brian Bondurant (Richmond, Va./Lloyd C. Bird) jumped 40 ft. 8 in. in the triple jump. Junior Alex Jackson (Centreville, Va./Westfield) ran a personal-best in the 1500 meters (4:16.70) and freshman Michael Shiplet (Jacksonville, Fla./Bartram Trail) finished the 800 meters in a personal-best time of 2:02.15.

The Generals return to competition next weekend at the Asics Liberty Invitational & Multi's. Action begins on Friday at 1:15 pm and at 9:30 am on Saturday.
