
ROANOKE, Va.-- The Washington and Lee outdoor track and field teams claimed 12 All-ODAC citations, set three championship meet records, had four ODAC champions, set five school records and notched one NCAA national qualifying mark at the 2008 ODAC Championships on Saturday afternoon hosted by Roanoke College. The women placed second out of six teams with 149 points, which is a record high point total, while the men were third among six schools. Also, junior Stacy Doornbos (Roswell, Ga./Lassiter) was named Track and Field Athlete of the Year, junior Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield) was named ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Head Coach Nate Hoey was named Coach of the Year for the women.
Roanoke won the women’s title with 218 points and was followed by W&L (149), Bridgewater (80), Lynchburg (66), Eastern Mennonite (45) and Virginia Wesleyan (22). Bridgewater won the men’s crown with 232 points and was followed by Lynchburg (200), W&L (64), Roanoke (62), Eastern Mennonite (21) and Virginia Wesleyan (9).
In the women’s meet, Doornbos won the high jump (5’3”), finished second in the long jump (17’11.75”) and the 100 hurdles (15.75). She also placed third in the 400 meters running 59.30 and sixth in the triple jump when she leaped 10.45. Additionally, Doornbos, freshman Summer Lollie (Mesquite, Texas/Dr. John D Horn), junior Stephanie Stelter (Magnolia, Texas/Concordia Lutheran) and junior Tara Hildenbrand (Castroville, Texas/Medina Valley) competed in the 4x100 meter relay and notched a third-place finish and set a school record (49.51).
Also, Webb brought home the gold in two events and both were championship meet records. She placed first in the 1500 meters running 4:44.90 and in the 800 (2:18.15). Junior Jessica Shaw (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) finished first in the 5000 meters when she crossed the tape in 17:29, which set a school record, was an NCAA qualifying mark and was a championship meet record. Also, sophomore Maggie Sutherland (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) registered a second-place finish in the high jump (1.57), a third-place finish in the 100 hurdles (15.95) and a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (10.53).
Other top performances included junior Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood), who set a school record in the steeple chase (11:59) for a second-place finish and she crossed the tape in 4:53.49 to finish third in the 1500 meters. Junior Grace Andrews (Dyersburg, Tenn./Dyersburg) placed in three events, finishing third in the shot put (10.79), fifth in the discus (29.31) and fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 33.02, which set a school record. Sophomore Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) finished fourth in the steeple chase, running 12:20 and sixth in the 1500 meters (4:59). Sophomore Dorothy Todd (Watkinsville, Ga./Athens Academy) had fifth-place completions in the 1500 meters (4:58.15) and 800 meters (2:25.11). Junior Alysen Kuck (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Joseph By the Sea) took third in the javelin with a toss of 33.92, while Stelter finished third in the 400 hurdles (67.17). Sophomore Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John’s) finished fourth in the 400 hurdles when she crossed the tape in 68.36 and also claimed fifth in the 100 hurdles (16.55).
On the men’s side, sophomore Billy Billington (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) threw 13.87 in the shot put for a second-place mark, tossed 13.87 in the discuss throw for another second-place finish and ended third in the hammer throw with a school-record toss of 47.68. Senior Michael Keenan (Chicago, Ill./Northside College Prep) took second in the javelin with a school-record toss of 51.87, while junior Vance Berry (Porte Vedra, Fla./Episcopal) finished second in the 5000 meters (15.33.54).
Addtionally, junior Alex Jackson (Centreville, Va./Westfield) finished third in the 3000 meter steeple chase (10:22.08) and the 4x100 meter relay team of senior Marshall French (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s), junior Sean Hurdiss (Missouri City, Texas/Elkins), sophomore Brian Bondurant (Richmond, Va./Lloyd C. Bird) and freshman Jeff Giordano (Slidell, La./Jesuit) also placed third (43.59). Also, sophomore Ryan Castle (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) finished fourth in the high jump (1.83) and sixth in the long lump (6.05), while Bondurant leaped 12.56 for a fifth-place finish in the triple jump.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday at the Penn Relays. Events are scheduled to begin at 12:30 pm.
