W&L Swimming Competes in Day Two of Nike Invitational

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams competed in the Nike Invitational hosted by Kenyon College on Friday. After two days of competition, the men’s team is currently sixth out of seven teams, while the women sit in eighth place out of eight squads.

Senior Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) led the W&L men with two outstanding individual performances. Sweet began the day by setting school and pool records in the preliminaries of the 50 free with an NCAA “A” cut time of 20.55 and then followed that up with a first-place finish in the finals, breaking his record with another “A” cut time of 20.43. Sweet also notched a “B” cut time in the preliminaries of the 200 free (1:40.80) and took third in the finals of the event (1:42.35).

Junior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) and senior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) also notched NCAA provisional qualifying times in individual events. Crook placed eighth in the 200 free (1:42.20), while McGlaston took fifth in the 50 free (20.90).

Additionally, the 200 free relay team of Sweet, McGlaston, junior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton) and sophomore Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee) took fourth in the 200 free relay with a “B” cut time of 1:23.30.

The Generals return to action for the final day of the Nike Invitational on Saturday at 10 am.
