
GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams competed in the final day of the Nike Invitational hosted by Kenyon College on Saturday. The men finished sixth out of seven teams, while the women were eighth out of eight squads.
Senior Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) was the Generals’ top performer for the second-straight day as he totaled another NCAA “A” cut and swam on the “B” cut 400 free relay team. Sweet opened the day by breaking his own school record in the preliminaries of the 100 free with an “A” cut time of 45.15. In the finals, he placed second and broke his record again with a time of 45:04.
Senior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) also competed in the 100 free and recorded a “B” cut time of 46.54 in the preliminaries before taking seventh in the finals with a time of 45.95.
McGlaston and Sweet teamed up with junior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) and sophomore Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee) to place third in the 400 free relay with a provisional qualifying time of 3:03.93, which was the second fastest time in W&L school history.
Crook and Barnds also posted solid performances in individual events. Crook took seventh in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.58, while Barnds placed 17th in the 100 free (46.87).
The Generals return to action on Jan. 12 when they host Marymount at 1:00 pm.
