
LEXINGTON, Va.— Senior attacker Christine Bender (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) amassed a career-high five goals to lead No. 8 Washington and Lee to a 14-8 victory over No. 3 Middlebury in women’s lacrosse on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Panthers struck early in the first half scoring the first two goals before the Generals answered back with two of their own to tie the contest, 2-2, at 22:19. Middlebury’s freshman attacker Chase Delano (Greenwich, Conn./Vanderbilt Univ) slipped one passed senior goalkeeper Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn.Simsbury) at 11:24 to put them back on top, but W&L added two more markers, taking a 4-3 lead into the break.
W&L (9-1) began the second period with four-straight scores, capped off by a free-position goal from senior defender Kat Michaels (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) at 22:44 to give W&L an 8-3 edge. Delano tallied two of the Panthers' ensuing three goals, tightening the contest to 9-6 with 15:33. Yet, Middlebury could not get any closer as the Generals picked up their first-ever victory over the Panthers.
Bender’s scoring was supplemented by sophomore attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), who had three goals and two assists, while junior midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge) tallied three goals. Junior attacker Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) also notched one goal and dished out two assists. Tilbor denied 13 would-be goals in goal for W&L.
Middlebury (3-1) was paced by Delano, who had four goals, while sophomore attacker Dana Heritage (Cheshire, Conn./Hotchkiss) notched two goals. Senior attacker Amanda Smith (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) also chipped in two assists. Junior goalkeeper Blair Bowie (Washington, D.C./National Cathedral) played the majority of the contest in goal, tallying five saves and allowing 12 goals.
Washington and Lee returns to competition on Thursday as it hosts Catholic for a 4:00 pm game.
