W&L VS. BC: This is the 27th meeting between the Eagles and the Generals with BC holding a 22-4 advantage in the all-time series. Bridgewater has won four of the last five meetings with W&L, but the Generals did win the most recent match-up. W&L topped the then-ranked No. 24 Eagles, 65-60, in Lexington, Va., on Jan. 20, 2007.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES: BC enters today’s contest with a 2-4 overall record and an 0-2 mark in ODAC play. The Eagles are coming off a 79-71 loss to Ferrum on Thursday. In the loss to FC, freshman guard Jordan Burkholder led the Eagles with 23 points, connecting on 13-of-16 of her attempts from the foul line. On the season, Burkholder paces BC with 16.0 points per contest, while senior guard Jessica Timberlake adds 13.2 points per game.
LAST MEETING WITH BC (1/20/07): Forward Kristen Krouchick recorded 22 points and 10 rebounds as the Washington and Lee women’s basketball defeated a ranked opponent for the first time in program history with a 65-60 win over No. 24 Bridgewater. The first half of the contest was back-and-forth and featured six ties. The Eagles led by as many as four points several times, but the Generals took a 29-28 advantage into halftime. Bridgewater used a 17-7 run in the opening 5:27 of the second half to take a nine-point lead (45-36) at 14:33, but Washington and Lee battled back and tied the contest at 52-52 with 8:08 remaining. The game remained tight and was tied three times in the final eight minutes, but guard Emily Wolff’s layup at 1:33 gave W&L a one-point edge (61-60) and the Generals connected on 4-of-6 from the free throw line to earn the five-point victory. Krouchick’s double-double paced the Blue and White, while center Jessica Hunsinger notched eight points, a game-high 17 rebounds and four blocks. The Eagles were led by guard Amy Childs, who tallied 19 points, and guard Katy Herr Lovell’s 15 points and nine boards.
UP NEXT: The Generals begin a three-game road trip next week, facing off against Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday and then taking on Roanoke on Friday. W&L ends its road swing against Eastern Mennonite on Jan. 15.
LAST TIME OUT: Apprentice’s Tyisha Battle registered 11 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Builders to a 56-51 win over W&L on Dec. 6 at the Warner Center. Both teams struggled offensively in the first half and the score was knotted at 20-20 at the break. The Generals opened the second stanza with a 14-3 run, taking a 34-23 edge with 16:25 left in the game. Apprentice chipped away at the W&L advantage and tied the game, 38-38, at 10:14. Three lead changes and three ties ensued from that point on until Apprentice took the lead for good, 53-51, with 1:10 remaining. The Builders went on to sink three-of-four foul shots in the final 33 seconds to ice the game. The Generals were paced by senior forwards Kristen Krouchick and Amanda Kane, who each tallied 14 points. Freshman center Felice Herman registered six points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
KING OF THE GENERALS: Mandy King (Southern Maine ’98) is in her fifth season as head women’s basketball coach at W&L and has a career record of 51-61 (.455). King is assisted by Kristen McCandless (TCNJ ’03), who is in her third season.
WELL-ROUNDED GAME: There is a reason senior Kristen Krouchick is listed as a guard slash forward -- she plays both positions and both ends of the floor equally well. In 2006-07, she was first on the squad in points (13.5 ppg), second in rebounds (6.8 rpg), tallied five double-doubles and recorded three 20+-point games. She also scored in double-figures in all but seven games. This season, she is averaging a team-best 12.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest. In a 76-66 loss to Alvernia, she tallied her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Also, Krouchick tallied a season-high 21 points and eight rebounds in a 62-59 win over Mary Baldwin on Nov. 27.
EDITING THE RECORD BOOKS: Additionally, senior Kristen Krouchick has been the Generals’ leading scoring for each of the last two seasons and has made an impact on the all-time records at W&L. She currently owns 1,140 points, 460 rebounds, 131 steals and 159 assists in her career. Her 1,140 points rank sixth all-time and she needs just 26 more points to move into fifth place. Also, Krouchick is shooting nearly .400 percent from the floor this season and her career shooting percentage (.455, 470-1032) ranks second all-time at W&L.
“HURRIKANE” AMANDA: An athletic and physical player, senior forward Amanda Kane can be a devastating player for opponents to guard as she can score from all areas of the floor -- from the perimeter to the paint. So far this season, Kane is posting a second-best 10.4 ppg and 5.0 rpg. She has scored in double-figures in four games, including a season-high 14 points against Newport News Apprentice.
DE LONE RANGER: A Delone Catholic graduate, and center Felice Herman is already making her mark as a freshman. She recorded her first-ever double-double in a win over Hollins on Dec. 4 when she tied her career-high with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor and grabbed a career-high 15 boards in just 18 minutes of play. She also recorded a team-high 13 rebounds in the loss the Apprentice. This season, Herman is averaging 7.0 ppg and a second-best 6.1 rpg.
TAKING CENTER STAGE: Sophomore center Kaitlyn Kamp showed that she’s ready for the limelight with her performance in the Generals’ 62-59 win over Mary Baldwin on Nov. 28. Kamp tied a career-high with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and pulled down a season-high eight rebounds. This season, Kamp is averaging 3.7 ppg and 3.9 rpg.
FREE THROW WOES: The Generals have not been taking advantage of their opportunities from the foul line this season. They are averaging 59.5 percent (88-148) from the line, compared to their opponents’ 68.9 percent shooting (115-167). Also, W&L has hit just 47.8 percent (11-23) of their attempts in the final five minutes and overtime. The Blue and White opened the season with a season-best 71.4 percent outing (20-28) from the line in a 76-66 loss to Alvernia, but have not broken 70 percent since then. Senior forward Kristen Krouchick (16-22, .727) and freshman guard Allie Long (4-4, 1.000) are the only players averaging over 70 percent from the line, while there are five players averaging 58 percent or less on the season.
DOUBLE-TROUBLE: For the first time this season, five Generals (Amanda Kane 15, Felice Herman 11, Bethany Ridenhour 12, Emily Wolff 11, Kristen Krouchick 10) scored in double-digits in the 80-50 victory over Hollins on Dec. 4. Two out of five players either tied a career-high or notched a season-high. The last time the Blue and White had five players (Kane, Krouchick, Hunsinger, Wolff and Otey) with double-figures was in an 82-67 win over Emory on February 16, 2007.
