Sophomores are required to live in University housing, and juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply. Several types of accommodations are offered by the University:
The Francis P. Gaines Residence Hall is a 200-bed facility that provides housing, primarily in attractive apartment-like suites, for upperclass students. The residence hall will accommodate students who request to be grouped together by interest.
For upperclass and law students seeking on-campus, apartment-style accommodations, the Woods Creek Apartments feature three-, four-, and five-student apartment units, each with a kitchenette, living room, and single occupancy bedrooms. There are 40 such apartments accommodating a total of 142 students who live in a convenient but secluded part of the central campus.
The International House, the John Chavis House (named for W&L's 1st black student), the Outing Club House, and the Casa Hispánica (Spanish House) also provide limited residential accommodations.
MicroFridge
In order to satisfy the demand for refrigerators and microwave ovens, Washington and Lee University has approved the MicroFridge rental program. The MicroFridge unit consists of a microwave oven and a refrigerator with separate freezer in an integrated unit.
The MicroFridge is the only cooking appliance allowed in students’ rooms. You may bring your own small refrigerator, but its capacity may not exceed a 2.5 cubic feet. You will receive information separately about renting these units. (Rental refrigerators are also available from Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity on campus.)
The Melvin Corporation will provide rental information and the rental rate during the summer. Checks should be made payable to Melvin Corporation. Should you have any questions, please contact Jay Melvin at 540-463-3693 or melvincorp@embarqmail.com.
