Fraternity Houses
Fraternity chapters generally set their own requirements for eligibility to live in the chapter house. Those requirements can vary from chapter to chapter. In terms of the University's standards, however, the chapter President is required to live in the chapter house. Additional upperclassmen and/or officers are encouraged to live in as well. The remainder of the rooms may be filled with any member of the chapter who is a sophomore or above. Sophomores who live in fraternity and sorority houses satisfy the University's sophomore residency requirement.
Thirteen North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) fraternities are represented at Washington and Lee. They are:
All of the fraternities maintain chapter houses. Slightly more than 75 percent of Washington and Lee men affiliate with fraternities which operate dining rooms and provide lodging for many members in the chapter houses.
Sorority Houses
Sorority chapters generally set their own requirements for eligibility to live in the chapter house. Those requirements can vary from chapter to chapter. The sorority system, originally established at Washington and Lee in January 1989, is continuing to evolve in a manner which is responsive to the needs and interests of the female students. Approximately 75 percent of Washington and Lee women affiliate with sororities. All of the sororities maintain chapter houses with lodging, lounges, and dining rooms.
