Numerous W&L Students Earn Scholar-Athlete Awards

Sixteen Attain a 4.0 or Higher Grade-Point Average for the Fall Semester

Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 155 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed fall term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

Additionally, 16 of the students honored achieved grade-point averages of 4.0 or higher (an A+ is worth 4.330 at W&L). Among the students achieving 4.0 or higher GPA's were sophomore wrestler Sammy Brusca (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep), senior women's soccer player Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), freshman cross country and track athlete Dave Doobin (Summit, N.J./Newark Academy), senior women's tennis player Katie Duncan (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School), senior women's lacrosse player Allison Gockley (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy), senior cross country runner Alex Gould (Rocky Mount, N.C./Rocky Mount Academy), senior football player Thomas Hubka (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine), senior football player Britt Jamison (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill), freshman lacrosse player Sarah Miller (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock), sophomore women's swimmer Annaria Nardone (South Windsor, Conn./Loomis Chaffee), sophomore cross country runner Elliott O'Brien (Hamilton, New Zealand/Hamilton), senior All-ODAC women's swimmer and ODAC Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year Amy Roberson (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches), sophomore All-ODAC cross country and track athlete Dorothy Todd (Watkinsville, Ga./Athens Academy), sophomore men's basketball player Bena Tshishiku (Martinez, Ga./Lakeside), junior All-ODAC and All-Region cross country and track athlete Elizbeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield School) and sophomore wrestler Russ Weems (Greenville, S.C./St. Joseph's Catholic).

Other notable athletes to receive Scholar-Athlete awards included junior All-ODAC and All-Region cross country and track athlete Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Episcopal), senior All-ODAC and All-State basketball player Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), senior All-ODAC and All-Region cross country and track athlete Tom Brower (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy), junior All-America swimmer Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell), senior All-America golfer Nathaniel James (Keller, Texas/Keller), senior ODAC and Virginia College Division Football Defensive Player of the Year Kyle Luby (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park), ODAC field hockey Rookie of the Year Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr), senior All-America swimmer Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro), sophomore All-America volleyball player Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep), junior All-ODAC and All-Region women's lacrosse player Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown), senior All-ODAC and All-Region women's lacrosse player Megan Slosson (Cockeysville, Md./Maryvale Prep), junior All-America tennis player Katie Tabb (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina), junior All-ODAC and All-Region cross country and track athlete Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood), junior All-America women's soccer player Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) and junior All-ODAC and All-Region cross country and track athlete Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma).

Twenty-two of W&L's 23 varsity athletic programs achieved a team GPA of at least 3.000, led by the riding team with a 3.479. The highest men's team GPA was the men's cross country team with a 3.402 and no team recorded a GPA lower than 2.891. W&L had an outstanding fall season on the playing fields as well.

W&L's nine fall sports teams combined for a record of 74-23-3 (.755) with volleyball, men's cross country and women's cross country all winning ODAC Championships.
